UV is great for killing any pathogens in source water. I use RO water and run that through a UV filter to kill any bacteria, virus or algae that make it through the RO filter. Using a UV filter to keep your nutrient solution sterile will cause certain elements to precipitate out of suspension.

Just like Sativuuh said Next time I'll put the drain hole in the bottom of the drum, run line through a hole in the stand, then angle over to a ball valve. I would also recommend a UV filter for your RO set up. It will kill any algae and pathogens that might be in your source water.
