as long as you can put your hand at the level of your tops and it is comfortable then you are fine

I agree with trimming very bottom leaves to stop mold mildew. IMHO if you have adequate ventilation you should not have a problem with a thick canopy. As far as being yellow and all the energy used up.....not true it just means the nitrogen has been drained out of them. if you see this in veg...

Never remove any leaves unless they are completely dead and dry. Think about the leaves as a way of the plant gathering energy. The more leaves the more light energy the plant can soak up the faster it will grow.

I use a co2 generator for my room (9x9) all it is is a propane burner works great and only costs me about 10 bucks a week for propane it also produces heat for your room in the winter. I wouldn't recommend a generator unless you have an outbuilding room though (not in your house)
