Your correct in the assumption that the hps burns hotter but you should also be looking at lumens as well as spectrum color as well. Hope it helps. IMO - I'd go with the fluorescent sides if your just supplementing light.

well nizza, good catch. definite hot spots. I'm vertically challenged with 6 1/2' ceilings compounded by the close grouping of my system.
