Is dolomitic lime neccessary for a good soil mix?

How hard did you look for the stuff? You'll often times find it with the grass seeds/ferts because it's a common additive for making your lawns greener. The reason you won't find it online much is because the stuff is so cheap. I've seen big 2 cubic foot bags of the stuff for much less than...

The Xtra Sun is a higher end Hydrofarm. I'm not sure about Hydrotek.

Johnny Purple Seed's quest for the next big purple strain

Nothing much to report today. Plants seem to be doing well. One thing I did notice is that my Purple #1 is drinking a lot of water. I weigh the pots after I water them and each pot weighs roughly 7.5 lbs after watering, give or take. Well today the Purple #1 is already down to 5 lbs 5 oz...

    Massive grow or not???

Always assume, no matter the strain, that your neighbors will smell it. Be proactive with odor control and address the problem before it arises, or else it may be too late. Look into get a carbon filter and inline fan.

Yes, you most definately can transplant the rockwool clones into soil. Just treat it as a soil plant thereafter.

Johnny Purple Seed's quest for the next big purple strain

It's been a while since I've posted individual photos of each plant. Well here they are: Sour Ol' Granddaddy - she's finally starting to pack on some weight, although she's still a runt compared to the other plants. I'm expecting big things out of her. I know her previous owner didn't clone...

Johnny Purple Seed's quest for the next big purple strain

I didn't snap pictures during the process since it's best to take the cut and dip it in the solution and place it in the rockwool immediately, but here is a pic of the 3 choice cuttings. And here are the scraps that I'm trying to salvage. One is in rockwool because I soaked an extra cube...

    will this 400watt bulb work?

Yes, it will work. Before specialty bulbs were invented, people grew with traditional MH/HPS bulbs. Specialty bulbs will have additional color ranges that will benefit the plant, but that standard bulb will work just fine as well.

Johnny Purple Seed's quest for the next big purple strain

I needed to practice my cloning, so I decided to take a few cuts today. The Sour Ol' Granddaddy was still too small to be cloned and I already had 2 Durban Poison clones, so I ended up only taking cuttings from the Dynamite, Holland's Hope and the Purple #1 mothers. The method I chose was Dip...

    california grow newbie, quick question!

I think as long as you have good ventilation, including fans blowing directly onto the plants, they should be okay. It's not going to be in the ideal temperature range for some of the cycle, but you can mitigate that by running the lights at night time as much as possible. Also, adding CO2 to...

    Less expensive substitute for perlite?

I was just up in Portland and I noticed they had coco blocks for $10 and 2 cubic foot bags of Black Gold Cocoblend for $11 at Fred Meyers. It was the regular price. I used to love the regular Black Gold soil when I lived in Portland, but they don't sell that brand down here. I wish I would...

Johnny Purple Seed's quest for the next big purple strain

Man, I get back from my trip to find my car was broken into. They stole my sub and face, but left the rest of the deck as well as the amp. As for my plants, they seem pretty light and I really should water them, but I have to wake up early tomorrow, so I dunno. I'm trying not to let it get...

    My First Coco Grow!

Glad to hear you are vegging them for at least another week. Have you considered training your plants in some way? You seem to have a lot of available horizontal space in your grow tent. You could conceivably veg them for another month if you tie down your plants or do some sort of SCROG and...

    Less expensive substitute for perlite?

I get Fox Farm Ocean Forest for $10.50 for 1.5 cubic feet. Perlite is $16 for 3.8 cubic feet. The key is to find a good wholesaler in your area.

Johnny Purple Seed's quest for the next big purple strain

A few of the lower leaves on my Purple #1 were starting to show a faint signs of Nitrogen burn, as you can see in this pic and the previous post. A lot of people say you don't need to add ferts within the first month of using FFOF soil, but for this grow I wanted to test the boundaries a...

    topping and pinching

Topping is when you completely cut off the top of the plant. This results in two new main kolas. Pinching is an inexact science, but it involves literally smashing the top of your plant together with your fingers. What grows out of that can be as many as 8 new kolas.

Johnny Purple Seed's quest for the next big purple strain

Here a couple of shots of my girl, day 15. And here is a group shot. Note the Holland's Hope in the close left of the frame. She's recovered nicely from being rootbound and has resumed outgrowing the bunch, although the Dynamite (close middle) might have her beat for overall leafiness...
