I've never heard such a thing. A 1000 watt ballast setup is larger and heavier in every way when compaired to a 400 watt bllast setup. I sure hope your ballast is in a good metal container before you try this because is sounds like a recipe for fire.

Wow, you folks must live in the south. Of course I have only 1-1000 and 2-400s, not to mention I'm doing it in a basement but summer is wonderful because I can get the temps up to where they should be. The winter sucks trying to keep the temps up.

A little more info might be helpful. Is this a new setup or one that was previously working? If it's new then you might have something wired wrong or you might not have matched up everything correctly (IE: ALL 400 W HPS bulbs and ballast are not interchangeable/compatible). If it's not new and...
