The real "300$" walipini (pit greenhouse)

There ya go, a pic of a lady in there. I have the heating system setup and it's working well so far. Going to do some learning and data logging on how long it will hold heat with how cold of a night, then we're on to some growing of the other ladies.

The real "300$" walipini (pit greenhouse)

In typical "two steps forward, one step backward" fashion, I found better materials. I replaced the floor with ruined hardwood and my plastic water cube with an old metal diesel tank. The diesel tank is so much better and it can actually benefit from passive solar heat.

Not a lot got done today. Fixed a double pane window that lost its seal. I found this image on engineeringtoolbox. Com According to this chart, my 250gal (946L) of water in my cube, at a temperature differential of 20 degrees celcius on average, would give it around 20-25 KW/hr of energy to the...

The real "300$" walipini (pit greenhouse)

This picture makes me laugh. My eclectic collection of free insulation is on display here. Also the floor and back wall I just put in. My dedication to staying below 300$ has at times left this project feeling a bit haggard but I think it's sort of coming together. I found some 2"x8" boards...

This is it before I set it up with some ballast. As soon as all the snow melted it began to float and immediately flipped upside down and swamped itself.

Working! Haven't done any usage testing yet but it works to melt an entire cube of ice and snow in a couple hours

Realized I was welding cast iron for the collar and it was cracking at the seams so I gave up and used some steel epoxy to make it water tight. I also suck horribly at welding, so there's that too. Little high heat enamel Tremclad and it's all good.

Yup, big old hdpe water tank. It'll be filled with water and the snorkel stove will be submerged and shielded if there are any hot spots. It's got a cage around it so the heated water shouldn't make it too soft.

Photo is after some disassembly. I dunno if the air pipe will be large enough so maybe I'll make two. Have yet to find some flat material for the extended firebox door.

My water cube, on its side with the patch and new hole in the top. I used a slice of another broken water cube to make a patch and then screwed from the inside out with roofing screws into 2x2 pine. The result is a waterproof screw pinching together two sheets of high density polyethylene, with...

The real "300$" walipini (pit greenhouse)

Once I'm closed in, I'm going to modify my current propane tank fireplace to be a snorkel heater like in the photo below. It already looks quite similar, I have the same kind of pipe on it and everything, just need to modify my current door to be a top feeding door. Also, I have a damaged water...

haha, ya I've used cardboard before but never in such a thick amount. It'll be interesting to use the infrared gun on the walls when it's sealed in and see how they are performing compared to EPS.

The real "300$" walipini (pit greenhouse)

I'm liking the mix of cardboard and foam. The black bags catch early morning and late evening light, making heat. Also the cardboard is mostly high up where there's less ground contact.. Without the straw there is a LOT more room and fewer complications. I'm thinking of using a livestock water...

The real "300$" walipini (pit greenhouse)

After a long lull in my cardboard supply and some head scratching on what to do next, someone replied to my kijiji ad for free foam insulation and gave me (20) 1ftx8ft pieces of foam, that's like 6.5 full sheets. Enough to finally finish and seal in. I got two walls done today, should have the...

4 more panels and I should have it covered and sealed in. The extra floor space is perfect for putting the barrels on their sides, under the floor.
