can someone explain what flowering is, how to do it, the benefits, and about what time i should start? (complete fricken noob over here)

is this normal? i'm a first time grower, so bear with me. at the base of the first 2 real leaves (not the ones after the seed sprouts) there is a small-but possibly growing-spot of purple. is this something i should worry about? im sorry i can't post pics, i'll try too soon.
