The medium soaks up the water slowly not allowing deoxygenation to occur. Overwatering is not from too much water but lack of air.

When it's a seedling yeah.

Get ur water. Put it in a tray that comes 1/6 maybe 1/4 of the way up your container. Let the pot just sit in that tray with your water. Remove tray after 2-4 hours. I have forgotten them for 12 hours before and the seedlings weren't overwatered at all.
