I say go for it. Sponge could make a great medium to grow hydro in. Only thing I would worry about is it might retain too much water and cause algae build up. The other thing would be if I was using sponge is that it would be a one time use then I would not try to reuse the sponge pieces again. Hydroton is in my opinion on of the best mediums when its coupled with rockwool.

sucks about the male but r u sure I'd b sure before I give up. If the other plant is suffering from nute burn it's pretty severe have u been feeding a lot. If so I'd fush it then i would give it str8 water for a while.

Not exactly, the t8's will work though if money is an issue. Just make sure you get some daylight spectrum and maybe cool white bulbs for it. Add cfls to the t8 floro and that should be plenty for veg. I got 2 3ft. moms and some doing fine off a 2ft. dual bulb t5 .
