I get the flavor mostly with a low heat vape... Some varieties are easy on a flame smoke, but overall vaping is much easier to define taste with... Generic blends are to blame too... Almost all of the more commercial strains are derived from the same old skunk 1, nl, haze, ww, euro blendings...

I always have Chems or Chem crosses, just because they are easy to grow, get me really high, without taking me off into crazy land like something like a psycho Haze...

I don't know about terps, but I sometimes get migraines, the bad ones that make you feel like you are super hung-over, and I swear by the indicas for medicine. I personally like the landracey ones the best. Some of them taste pretty rank at first, but a good few hits in, and I can feel relief...
