I appreciate your response, but I didn't say only sand. I said "sandy". Peat is a fine medium for growing plants, although it is known for compacting over time and not holding good structure. That's why it should have other things added to build up the structure. :)

@Sberarducci The soil should be loamy. That means that it is sandy with high porosity (lots of space in between all the granules). If you put your plant into soil that is not loamy, its going to stay too wet and die. It will be too wet for the plant even if it doesn't seem too wet. Soil...

I think straight peat moss needs dolomite lime added also or otherwise its pH drops to around 4 eventually.

A 3 inch pot is a good size starter pot. I would recommend using loamy soil that contains a low amount of nutrients and has been pH buffered at 7. You should always transplant before it becomes root bound. You'll want a root ball before you transplant again from the 3 inch pot to something larger.
