A 2X4 isn't actually a 2X4. Its a 1 1/2 X 3 1/2. When the board is first rough sawn from the log, it is a true 2x4, but the drying process and planing of the board reduce it to the finished 1 1/2 X 3 1/2 size. If you have never worked with lumber (like I hadn't when I began building), make sure you familiarize yourself with the actual dimensions of lumber before planning your build.
