Some updated pics of bbq , bucket trap now with floating container with some raw sausage in it.
Plus new spring trap i made up , i used a strong fishing rod tied to the cloths line , 50 pound fluro carbon fishing line
as the main line , then a cut off fishing hook as the trigger , then another 50 pound piece line tied to trigger then made into a loop
The bottom of loop is around 1/2 inch off ground .

I would take that lid with the sausage out. You have now just given the rat a foot stool

You are also going to need a much taller bucket. I have watched them jump/climb out of taller contraptions. Rats are super smart, If it gets wind of your trap it is likely to not return and will alert other rats of your trap as well.
I would also stop bating the grill and just keep the food in the trap, it will just ignore the peanut butter and steal the chicken.

You mat want to make that loop a little smaller, the idea is the animal gets its head through, feels the snare and panics, chokes its self out , if the snares open to far you may only get a piece or you may not get anything at all. Im not convinced the rat id\s getting through where you think it is. Block off all routes into the thing but one and snare it.

Well that snare didn't catch anything apart from me !!!
I was re-setting it , pulled the snare down and went to lock it in place
the trigger must of slipped off and it sprung back and the hook went straight into my eyelid
It hurt so bad , took like 20min to stop the bleeding , lucky it didn't go straight into my eye
I threw that shitty trap over the back fence in anger , then calmed down and had to jump the fence to get my fishing rod back.
Rat : 2
Me : 0
The war continues

Ok time for me to step in... please don't take offense but, stop being a dumbass....
go to the store and get some snap traps, bait with peanut butter (do not set traps) after peanut butter is gone bait again, 3rd time bait and set, it's not rocket science...

Although it's like a version of home alone...

Glad you still have two eyes. Invest in a barn terrier (patterdale from actual varmint catching stock) and track that bastard to his home so you can kill his children.

Nah, make the loop smaller and continue on Rambo. :bigjoint: Oh yeah take that darn hook off.
THAT HOOK IS GONE BRO , I will make loop smaller in snare , and maybe set up another couple of them.
I am also going to set up some kind of deadfall trap , still working on that one
That wil be 3 diff traps then , how lucky can a rat get ?
I used to snare rabbits as a kid , with a bit of fishing line and a tent peg , we caught hundreds like that
Rats are a bit smarter i'm thinkin !

May I suggest putting the snare inside the BBQ at the hole where he enters, smaller hole, smaller snare, also try using aviation cable or a metal snare he'll chew through fishing line. Hell if you know hes going in there, trap him and cook his ass!

Rats are very smart and usually don't fall for the same trap twice, they are also very weary of change... so they maybe avoiding your efforts altogether
they do have poor eyesight, so painting your traps black may help...

Don't think he is jumping mate; based on pics he is climbing the brick wall. Or did you pull the grill good distance from the wall already?

Excellent climbers... I've seen them running up walls and across pipes better than batman and robin...
they can squeeze into holes the size of a quarter with ease, a mouse only needs a 1/4in...

Looking a little better at the droppings they are those of a norway rat... they live

in the ground and in bushes and piles of wood or leaves
it's going to be tough to control... good luck

This is behind the bbq , the gap to the wall is 4"
The height to the gap is actually 2.5 foot from ground
I have seen this rat acouple of times and its pretty big , i'd say it's body is 5-6" long not including it's tail .
My jack russell has been right up it's ass acouple of times but the rat runs through tiny holes and cracks in the fence
