Overdriving Fluorescent Lights

Just read this in the GrowFAQ section and tried it, Man it really gave my lights a huge boost and these lights were Home depot $8.35 Lights.

Easy to do and I doubled my light output.

I read this but dont you loose light sort of since if you have 2 tube setup and turbo charge it you get 1 light that is only 1.7 times brighter meaning you lost .3 or 30% of the total light you had from 2 tubes plus coverage area is lowered? I guess you could spend 5 times the money to get the same light as half the amount of tubes would provide??

Yeah i see what you mean Professor, but i had the extra lights and i'm saving on not purchasing a MH light that i cant afford yet. so i wanted to get as much as i could from what i have.
I'm only growing enough for my personal use Like everybody else on here.

Its weird is I have seen in the last grow that when I used mh and hps light together the plants closer to the hps light seem to grwo faster denser and taller then the mh which is supposed to be better for veg.WQeird but Im starting to not have much mh faith.Yeah got it.I think I did got a bunch pms last 2 days lol

this reminds me of "bridging out" an amp in a car...very cool idea.

i guess you could just get two cheapo shop lights take the ballast out of one and put in the other so each bulb has it's own?

maybe i missed it, do the ballasts have to be digital for this to work??

dont think so check out the pics i think u just tamper with fuses, wiring, etc.

Yeah the ballast is taken out of one and put into another and i guess it's probably not economical unless you have the extra lights which i did or unless you like growing with the flourescents. and the lights are cheap $8 of course thats times two.
I flower with a 400 watt HPS btu for just keeping the mothers and plants growing and happy the fluoro's are working perfect. (one warm and one cool bulb)

High output T8's cost 2$ apiece at businesslights.com. When overdriving the 2 T8's with one ballast, the ballast senses the different load and adjusts itself. It puts out about 54 watts, and the light output goes to about 5000 lumens per tube. Get the TCP 3000K lamps, they have a good amount of red along with some blue and green, that matches the PAR curves very nicely. When overdriving, the ballast is actually underdriven and will feel very cool, but the tubes are overdriven and warm up a bit. It will help to aim a fan at the lights, to keep them in the optimum temperature range for maximum brightness. Also, T8 ballasts are plentiful on e-bay. You can get lots of 10 ballasts for $50 or less. Peace.
