these studies don't advocate defoliation for increasing yeild. they describe the effects of defoliation.

You cant use a study that was designed to help farmers in drought to continue to raise crops, that just so happened to show that if you defoliate, you use less H20, and the plant can better survive, as example of defoliation to increase yields.
