How close can I put my 400watts...

Im asking because i have a grow space thats only 4 ft tall, and i need to grow my plants 2-2.5ft tall, when the container they're in is 12'' tall. So by the time theyre where i want them to be that only leave me with about 12 to 6'' between.

I keep my 400watt MH at 2-3 inches from my plant tops... it barely puts out any heat.

800" away from the tops. Seriously, too many variables to say. I can have my plants 2-3" my light because I run a cool tube. others I've seen use a batwing reflector and have them be just as close.

what i do. is put your hand under your 400. and see where its warm or hot
then adjust from there. u never want to over do your plants.

i keep my 400 hps about 2ft above my babies.

Always 18 inches away unless u have very good cooling and even then i wouldn't put it closer than 8 inches.Get use to LST cause them plants are gonna outgrow your space,they can still be 2-2 1/2 feet just horizontally

You probably will think I'm crazy, but I use heavy duty black electricians tape which I tape around the back side of the taller colas then I tape the colas 1/16th. of and inch from 1,000 W HPS bulb. Sometimes I go ahead and tape all the colas right on the bulb. I love the way the buds sizzle and pop. This method also cures the herb at the same time. Believe me you're cured if you do it MY way.

I didn't know we was talking about harvesting a curing,but any good luck with that,i see you take all the hard work outta growing and ruin it with lights and heat.Good thing you use a vaporizer cause if you smoked blunts you always experience bad weed that way.

A small digital thermometer (walmart) comes in handy for this.You can clip it to a piece of string and take temp readings at the top of your plants whenever you want to.

I only have a small 150w hps and i have to keep my plants about 8 inches to a foot away or the leaves will burn. Idk about the kind of heat a mh puts out.

I think the reflector i have makes hot spots tho.

Every situation is different, and My hood (although 12 years old!) disperses the heat really well and vents through the top with no forced cooling or tube. There is also safety class on the hood which further helps dampen the heat. With my 1000w HPS my plants are 14-19" from the light and that is with an air cooled tube with 240cfm booster fan drawing the hot air out. I also have a cheap little oscilating fan pointed at an upward angle blowing through the top of the plants.

Obviously you are using a oversized reflector for your 400, which would be why you can get it so close. People using smaller "Euro" reflectors have to keep their lights much farther away due to a much narrower light footprint. Nobody is really talking out of their ass here, it all depends on your REFLECTOR guys. Think physics.
