I grew up in an area that was almost 50/50 white and black. And the black kids would laugh their asses off at being called African American. My step dad was black (he passed away, but he was married to my for 9 years). He used to say "I'm not from Africa. None of my family is from Africa. I've never been to Africa. I don't want to go to Africa. I don't even know where Africa is. I am not African American. I'm black." It's like me saying "I'm European American"...it's just weird... Once two generations of your family have been born in a country, and everybody's planning on staying there permanently, I think it's pretty safe to identify solely with that country...
