I see this mentioned often here, and really am interested in seeing the wisdom put forth to end this debate, here.

you can even vote for more than one !

The environment can influence sexual expression, however plants and therefore seeds are pre-determined males or females. Even feminized seeds simply saturate the seeds with ethylene, which makes even males behave as females. But they aren't really females, and I would be surprised if feminized seeds weren't the first to hermie under stress.

Environmental sex determination is known to occur in a variety of species.[SUP][78][/SUP] Many researchers have suggested that sex in Cannabis is determined or strongly influenced by environmental factors.[SUP][65][/SUP] Ainsworth reviews that treatment with auxin and ethylene have feminizing effects, and that treatment with cytokinins and gibberellins have masculinizing effects

seeds have no sex. hormone levels at germination are so high a sex cannot be determined. i will say that gender will lean one way or the other but it is not determined till about 2-4 week into growth. i encourage females all the time my rate is like 95% females. i only ever generated males for when i want to breed. i have done this successfully to to plants now. both showed female traits but where grown males by controlling hormones and lighting. the first i converted with physical stress, the second with nutrional regulation. give it a try, i can make 95% of any seed grow fem.

A seed is whatever it is going to be and that is that...if it is a male seed it is a male plant...if it is a female seed it is a female plant...but sometimes if you make some plants like MJ think they are dying they will change sexes to try and preserve their own bloodline...so it is what it is, until you make it something else...

There have been tests out there and they can change the sex of a cannibis plant from male to female and visa versa. it is all about hormones that are givin the the plant making it lean towards it but does nto always mean it will be that. just as he said above around 90% of the time it will go that way if u give it hormones. treatment with auxin and ethylene have feminizing effects, and that treatment with cytokinins and gibberellins have masculinizing effects

There you have it. Otherwise all seeds grown under identical conditions in my grow would all be males or females. Does that happen? Nope. You get about 50/50. Go figure...

this is wrong, conditions in nature are not perfect and how do you explain my ratio? those arent FEM seed ya know

MJ males have a Y chromosome just like you, and that didn't get created because of a light or phosphorus level. It's part of the seed's initial genetic sequence. No doubt the plant can wander between male and female appearance readily, which is what causes the confusion.

The Y chromosome defines the answer. Y=male. As stated you can easily manipulate the expression, but not create or alter the presense of that Y chromosome.

Nice references.

The first one speculates that the seed sex ratio may be influenced by environmental factors. That is, when momma and daddy plants got together to pollinate flowers, the environment AT THAT TIME might influence the sex of the seeds. That doesn’t seem odd, but note that the seeds are still male or female.

The second article, though anecdotal, confirms that hormones can affect the expression of male or female traits. His beef with feminized seeds is also my beef. Some of the “females” aren’t females at all. They are male plants in drag.

Both article confirm my points nicely.

ha if you think they prove your point your wrong. and as i told you gender may be influenced by genetics but not decided. the decisions is made after germination they only have a genetic predisposition to a gender.

that may have came off a little harsh but its true. as far as genes determining gender it all is a part of the enviro that affects the plants gender choice.

some other good example of where genes do not play into gender as much is in Rodents and Reptiles

with hormones all genders are possible. manipulating hormone levels can mutate genes resulting in a change its genetic gender

nice articles, but I fear they are mistaken friend. Environmentally(aside from radiation or chemical therapy) there is nothing you can do to change the sex sex of
a marijuana plant after it sprouts.

Polymerase Chain Reaction PCR and Gel electrophoresis are biotechnology tools for genetic analysis. Montana Biotech has created a PCR based test for determining cannabis marijuana seedlings sex 1 week after seed germination! Cannabis sex is determined by X, Y chromosomes, kinda like humans. This test allows a technician to test for the presence of female or maleness in marijuana seedlings before even the most seasoned cultivator can tell!

That pesky Y chromosome...

That's some very interesting info pharmaC.
with tissue culture some perverted sexing can take place....no sex at all, both expressions, only female or only males, or intersexers that only produce female seeds forever
