For this we'd be in jail.

Hunting Mass. trooper accidentally shoots woman[/h]AP – 12 mins ago

NORTON, Mass. (AP) — An off-duty state trooper who was hunting in southeast Massachusetts shot and wounded a 66-year-old woman who was out walking her two dogs when he mistook her pets for a deer.

The woman was shot in the torso while walking on a wooded path in Norton about 5 p.m. Saturday. Police said the trooper called 911 after realizing he had mistaken the tails of the two retrievers for a deer's tail.

The unidentified woman who lives in Norton was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. Authorities provided no further information on her condition.

State police on Sunday said investigators determined the shooting was an accident. The name of the trooper, who also lives in Norton, was not released because he faces no charges. The investigation continued.

Twelve minutes ago would have made it 7:30 pm, give them another 2 hours just because and it's 5:30 pm. Ok, you east coast hunters what time is sunset? If I figure this right he was hunting around dusk and in my state that is illegal. I think.

i think deer hunting is sunrise to sunset. i was thinking maybe a half hour past sunset but that may be for turkey season.

5 pm is getting hard to see and get a good shot at a deer unless its like 25 yards away or less.

he has got bit poor eyesight to be allowed a hunting license anyway (or let anywhere near a rifle.)

bit too eager for the kill yes..

might be bit more fun if the sheriff hadnt charged him (which some wanted) but just said

"take him out back boys and beat the living shit out of him"

He should not be able to own a gun. Hunters are supposed to know the area they are hunting in. If hes carrying a gun on public walking trails, the first thing on his mind should be watch out for people, or actually be able to see what your shooting at, not just shoot at ANYTHING that moves.

His mates in the precinct will punish him plenty for his display of professional fail. "Ladykiller" will be the least of it. cn

Wow, very sad story! It is unforunate that a life had to be taken for them to change their hunting law's. You shouldnt be able to hunt around any homes for miles. Such bullshit!!!!! I have a daughter that was born in 1988, couldnt imagine not being here to see her grow up! Peace

Awww man....can't somebody get a break...don't you think he feels awful if it really was an accident....it gets sensationalized because it was someone with a badge that messed up...but this is a common occurence in heavily hunted/populated areas...in retrospect could he have done things much more carefully...and what if he was drinking? We'll never know...I just feel bad for everyone involved... Have you ever hit anything embarrassing with your car...like a sign, or a wall or something...you just didn't see it? what if there had been a person there?! it would have been awful...so if it really was an accident, maybe she was a bad ass granny and they had beef, he saw her walking and blew her away? but I think it's pretty unlikely. There is a good chance that he will suffer severe guilt made worse because he is a police officer...

I do agree with you I think it was an accident. But, he above anyone else should have known what he was aiming at and what was behind it.

He will live with this the rest of his life. I for one would not want that on my conscience. I don't think I could live with it.
