germination is a nightmare

It is cold on the floor right now so I put my cups with seed and water and two cracked by morning. i then placed the paper towel plate in a cloning dome with water in the bottom. all had tap roots by end of day. then it was time to stare at dirt. There was nothing this morning, took a nap and one had come up. I can see where two are trying to come up but the rest aren't. Please come up because i don't want to dig into my last of my seed and have to reorder yet!!!!!:-(:wall:

After you put them in the dirt they can take up to a week to appear above the surface, stop digging around and checking and let them grow.

Start them in soil. No soak, no paper towel.
Yes exactly! I was using the old wet paper towel method and it worked but to many extra steps.

I just put 8 seeds in party cups and they ALL sprouted within 2 days. Fuck that paper towel shit.............

they can take up to 2 weeks.

(not necessarily a worse plant because of it..)

but some sprout overnight.

..once i put seed in soil, kept it moist for 2 weeks, nothing, forgot about it.

then i was starting new seeds and for some reason i decided to water this one again (had been dry maybe 2 weeks, was just a small pot.)

and after a week or so, it sprouted.

Keep the temperature up (soil temperature too) and keep the soil moist without keeping it wet. Cool/cold soil temperature will slow down or stop seeds from breaking the surface and some moisture is always needed.

hey bricktop, nice to see ya.

yeah, gotta agree with that.

what would you say was the perfect temperature bricky?

If i do use the paper towel method as long as the protruding root is white it is most likely alive and growing right?

And yes i am going to just start doing it right in the soil. How far down should i place the seed.
As far as temp and moisture, I have my cups in a cloning dome. the cups are doubled so they can drain and it stays warm and moist in there with out 'drowning' the soil. stays 85*-90* F.

I understand about different seeds sprouting different times. i once put a Kandy Kush from Reserva Privada and it literally was sticking up out of the soil 1/4" in 9 hours. The nodes looked like golf balls too it was so hardy> This strain respond VERY WELL to supercropping.

I mean, yeah they're alive, but it depends on how long, how wet, and etc. You don't really want to wait and find out though, get them in soil and that will be your answer.

When germinating in soil, mind their orientation so the pointy end is down, or some like to put them on their side with the seams horizontal, and like 1/4" - 1/2" of soil cover is good. You don't want the sprout to have to push up through too much, but you want it covered by a bit of dirt at least. I also like to scuff the tip and seams on them first so they crack a bit easier.

Use something like a pen or the tip of your finger to create a small hole, get the seed pushed into the soil a bit pointing the right way, then just gently fill in around and over it and pat down lightly. Use moist soil since it's a pain to do if it's really dry. ;)

I put them in the soil as soon as I saw any roots coming out of the seed. I use one of those little white label tags for pots. I use scissors to cut the sharp tip to be rounded off yet still small. This is a very gentle and effective tool for me to orient my seeds.
I just get nervous because when a seed you have ordered doesn't come up I feel let down. I also don't like to order more thatn i have to. I posted this in another thread, I do not know what strains to order that are stable and consistent, whether to order from attitude or the breeder themselves. Some guys have suggested Nirvana Ice and PPP. looks good.

My biggest problem about seed is that I cannot clone here. No room, I only have the one HID 400 watt and one 4' x 1' T5 fixture. Now i could clone but I only need a max of 8 at a time and I don't have the seed or time right now to make mother plants. If i had a 3rd space it would not be an issue unless i wanted to start a new seed.

The only thing I can think of is to save up a bit of extra $$ for my next seed request and seeing as I never tried to make some mothers before, I'll get enough to start a batch from seed and start some others to mother and clone under the T5s.
