i am definitely getting a nano when i get a new place. i don't want to start it here and then move... i need to be stable to have a nano.
I think nano's are awesome...I'm looking into starting a pico now...(Nano is typically 29-4 gallons...pico is generally 4-1.5 gallons)

Still buying the freshwater tank, but I wanna get my "hands wet" when it comes to marine environments as well...

Woot! Jackpot! I'm in the midst of cleaning my room so I can think about re-arranging furniture...Haven't even taken it out of the box, and I'm stoked already!

Nooooooooooooo....Not for a while...I gotta cycle the tank first...besides, I need to get paid so I can purchase some more goodies...I'm in the process of looking at pico reef setups online, might order one tonight!

Yup, pulled the trigger...just ordered a brand new JBJ Picotope online for under 50 bucks shipped! This is hopefully gonna become my pico reef, invertebrates and maybe ONE fish...I wanna try to grow some corals, so I might have to add some lighting, but thats something we're all familiar with in the weed growing community ;)

Hopefully I can get it looking like this or better! I'm gonna add pieces bit by bit, but I already have a little tiny adjustable powerhead I can add...Next thing is maybe upgrading the filter and modding it into a fuge, perhaps a tiny little heater too...

Nice dude, I like it when people get shit done for real!...take your time picking out fish, make sure you get things you can put together...( FYI, don't get a Red Devil unless thats all you want) )...they look cute, untill you try an add a freind to the tank and they kill it. Any chiclids like oscars or dempseys...it's best to raise them together, they get territorial. Even some community fish are crazy...I set-up a 180 of community fish, fuck me!...some got huge, like over a foot...and some got mean when I tried to add others, and they live forever too...like 10+ years easy.( I guess that stands true for most fish though)
Another thing I always did with all my fish was feed them a big variety of food. They sell all kinds of frozen food too, like brine shrimp, krill, blood worms, and different larvas , the little guys can eat this too. You can take a little water from the tank , put a little chunk of food in a shot glass for 30 seconds and thaw it out first...big fish will just eat it frozen.Good luck, keep postin updates.:bigjoint:

A saltwater pico kit for $50? Can I have that link?

First step to setting up your tank is find a good stable stand. 36g of water weighs ~288 lbs, +gravel, +glass, and you have a lot of weight in a pretty small area. It really sucks to get your tank half filled just to notice the bookshelf it's on start to wobble.

Like Rowlman said, take your time and do your research. Some fish DESTROY their environment, some can live with other - others fight, some need to have buddies of the same type, some like soft water, others hard... While I was deciding what to start out with I used triops to entertain me. Yea Triops!

They are very short lived - perfect for filling voids.

Creepy water bugs...lol...Living fossils indeed, if they grew any larger I think I'd be afraid of them....They almost look like little horseshoe crabs.

It's not a complete setup...it only comes with a 3 gal rounded edge glass aquarium, a pico filter(40 GPH), and a 9w CL light and fixture...I bought it off amazon, through "Petsolutions"...

http://www.amazon.com/JBJ-Gallon-Picotope-Curved-Aquarium/dp/B002BCEFCO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321038771&sr=8-1

To be honest, i'm fairly sure I could have set something up for cheaper...but then again I dunno...the filter and CL light, not to mention a quality all glass pico aquarium for under 50 bucks? You guys tell me, whats the going rate on a tiny filter and at least 9w 50/50 light with fixture?

But yeah, I have a powerhead I might already use, its adjustable up to 100gph, but I'm gonna tone it down to less than half that probably...or I might buy a new one since i'm using the one I have to help top-drip clones till their roots hit water in my DWC...Then I need the live rock and sand, obviously...and a 25-50w heater, but they're cheap too...The goal is to get everything running so I can start cycling, then add the remaining pieces I need during the cycle as the money becomes available...

And I eventually might get an AquaClear70, mod it as a fuge, and just use the stock light for a fuge light if I upgrade to something bigger for the tank.

Fuck me. Salt water aquarium for xmas or a new Saxophone? Or a pico and a slightly cheaper new saxophone? God damn decisions.

And by xmas I mean right now - but that's the excuse.

I would reccomend the ammonia cycle as a matter of fact Metasynth. It's my way of cycling, ensures youll get a full cycle the right way without the other risk factors when you just dump "starter fish" in and prey they live long enough to ccycle the tank. No chance of introducing any unwanted parasites and yucky stuff :)

Since i started doing the whole planted aquarium thing i've used this expensive plant subsrate thet is equivelant to planting soil but is baked into little balls. That stuff has sooooo much nutrients in the stuff that i just put the tank together and add water, the ammonia leaches out of the substrate and thats my ammonia source. With the stuff,Aquasoil< you HAVE TO CYCLE A LIL LONGER BUT WAY WORTH IT.

Not to shit in your cereal bowl or anything but id reccomend at least a 10 gallon for saltwater. Youll find it extremely hard to keep water stable in anything smaller,20 would be ideal starter. Just my $0.02 u.s.d.

That would make a beautifull paper weight on your desk...but for fish...I'm not to convinced.

Okay, it's a reef, no fish...whats the point??...a couple shrimp maybe?...lol
