Is there any factual information regarding vegging under 18/6 vs 24/0. Is there a growth difference and is one a better method than the other aside from saving on electricity.

Ive also noticed that some strains including mine get pissed of with 24/7 within a few weeks of doing it.
I have switched back to 18/6 now as a result.
I have no definite evidence just my own observations and i don't know of any factual links either as its always just another growers opinion and strain thats been tested.:blsmoke:

with a 24/7 you plants dont have time to get there roots as involed. All the time is spent into growing upwards and not so much down. Its healther for you plants to have that 6 hours of what we would call "sleep"

I know that 18/6 increases your chance of females from seed, i dunno what the percentage is but i have read it in a book i bought at barnes and noble... I have also heard seen one of my friends change his light from 24/0 to 18/6 in the middle of veg and it caused him to have a high amount of hermies, so if you were to do 18/6 make sure you start out at 18/6 and dont change it. Every strain is different i dunno for sure it will cause hermies but its a change for the plant and plants dont like change to much

hi natmoon! I'm so glad you weighed in on this debate. I am curious to know about this too since my impression was the only benefit was the electric bill savings. But then I heard it may increase the number of females - have you noticed this? I see 18/6 in my future!

I read this subject in one of my indoor books i picked up.In Ed rosenthals book he claims that "studies" have been done on the 24 vs 18 hrs of lighting. He doesnt cite his source, but says that the 24 hrs gets them off to a faster start. If anyone has the book, its chapter 21: early growth.
He could be making it up though. I like 24/0 either way.

I like 24/24 for clones (shading with paper for the first day or two) until the roots are really bursting out ( would call that early veg) and when potted out, 18/6 for about 10 days. Then away we go...

Seeds predisposition their sex within their DNA before they even sprout. Thats why you are able to purchase already feminized seeds. I give my plants a 16/8 light cycle during veg and I am able to typically get 7 out of 10 to be females. However I do believe that plants need some sort of dark period as every plant needs a light/dark period to grow, hence the photosynthesis in science class that we all learned. I am sure they were not just making this up or else they would of told us that there is no such thing as a "photosynthesis" of a plant. Also by leaving a shorter day time period your hydro bill wont kill ya as much. Personally I have a hard time sleeping and knowing my lights are on. Call me paranoid but I am always afraid that I'm going to wake up to a blown up bulb or a fire.

in my experience 24/0 will give you more growth than 18/6 but not enough to justify the extra money spent on electric. i have vegged plants entirely on 24/0 so i know they dont need the dark, i dont think plants 'sleep'.

i root my clones with 24/0 as this shaves off a few days but i think its due to the minimal temperature fluctuation more that the light

yah you think you get better growth on 18/6 because when the lights are off the reach for the light, which means the nodes have a chance to space out, if you want a nice tightly noded plant id stick with 24/0 personally thats what i use is 24/0

I have better results with 18/6...I think they like the dark period...
Although I don't have all that many indoor grows under my belt, I agree 100%. The plants did much better when I did 2 things:

1) start them under flouros for the first 10-14 days

2) ran them at 18/6 instead of 24hrs

I have done both and watched alot of big setup grows and found 24 hours on is a much better light schedule.Faster rootings for clones and saves a ton of veg time as I only need 10 days of veg in aero. I find the plants to get thicker stalks and larger fan leaves much quicker. The 18/6 is ok but I found it slows rooting clones and plants had a more droopy sick look not to mention the added veg time that is needed. I reccomend and use 24 hours on for veg
