I am wondering how you grow those dense buds. i have gone soil and half way thru my flowering hydro, and i looks like i am not getting those dense tight flowers i am looking for. Is there some nutrient i am missing or something. i am running t5 veg. 400 watt hps flower 4x4x6 tent. exhaust pulling thru hood by a 6 " can fan 24/7 2x4 tray filled with hydroton with a recirculating drip system feeding 4 times a day. i add fresh water every other day and add one gallon of full strength nutrients mid week and change rez every week. USING BLOOM EURO A&B FOR BASE. SUPPLEMENTS-BLOOM ROOTS-LIQUID KARMA-BLOOM CAL/MAG FOR VEG. AND BLOOM EURO A&B BASE. SUPPLEMENT-BLOOM ROOTS FOR FIRST 4 WEEKS- BOTANICARE SWEET RAW-BOTANICARE HYDROPLE FOR FLOWERING. STILL NO DENSE NUGS. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I NEED FOR SUCCESS.

wow I only use a general purpose veg nute but I'm in soil. there are products that make claims but I don't buy into em, though there are several growers here that swear by em. I have never needed em so never tried em.

IMO the real secret is understanding ALL of the elements of your garden and having them dialed in for perfection, while there are guidlines for where to start, learning to read your plants is key to understanding what they need when they need it and giving it to them. And I don't mean just nutes, I mean everything temp, humidity, light, nutes, fresh air, co2, circulation etc. If you do this they will reward you!

Hey, Joe. From what you have said, I would think if you saw signs of deficiencies while flowering, it would be nutes. From what I read, I would ask you how old your 400 watt HPS bulb is, first and foremost. If that is new, which I bet it is, I would say you need more lumens per plant. You can do this by lowering the amount of plants you have in there (I did not see how many plants you are running?) under the same 400 watt lamp, OR you can keep the same amount of plants and get another HPS in there, or just buy a bigger HPS like 600 or 1000 watt. Also, how close is your light to your plants? If you have pics, that would help.

Pruning to a shallower canopy is going to get you the bigger, tighter buds you want. Probably not more weight overall but less larf and more log.

I am running 8 plants in the 2x4 tray 3 plants are 2 weeks older and much larger. Maybe my canopy of plants is to much for this 400 watt like JACK RIPA said i may think to pruning down the canopy for more light. i was always told pruning down fan leafs are like cutting down there solar panels. there are pros and cons for both. i might try Jack the ripas way.

If you have 3 plants that are a lot larger, you have to keep your light farther away from the young ones.So you are costing your young plants a lot of good light penetration into the canopy at a very important moment for development. Also, Jack IS RIGHT, but I think he is meaning pruning your underbranches before you go into flower, so you have even light going to a very shallow canopy, and no buds are going to be the light, wispy, low hanging buds that we call Duff. That is, if I am picking up what he is throwing down. I do not think he is saying to cut your canopy down to the level of the other ones, or cutting your "solar panels".

Not trying to be argumentative, I just thought this needed clarification once you said you had several older plants under one light. Good luck, man! Would love to see some pics. Here is a pick of mine.

Yes, pruning under branches, not just big leaves. Look at the branch, if it isn't going to get into the light, eliminate it. A 400 watter only has so much power. If you want more thick buds move up to a 600 hps at least. Then it's all about canopy control. Tie and manipulate your plant. Then you will see those thick colas.

This plant is 2 feet tall (measured from top of pot) the colas are 14 inches tall it is under a 400 watt light that is 25 inches above the canopy (so 4 feet above the pot) it only gets fed a general purpose 20-10-20 chem nute that only cost a dollar a pound, thats right I use this nute the whole way thru (in my last grow I pulled a pound and a half off 4 plants)

Please understand what I said about dialing in your garden is what matters not some fancy nute in a pretty bottle

i have 6 different strains Balzac. i have Gods bud, white berry, lsd, super skunk, white diesel in the far right corner is the oldest and is looking the most harry, but the berry-juana has the most resin and fregrance and i looks like its producing mors buds than hairs, but i see other peoples crops at 5 weeks and mine look stupid compared . i just feel like im not boosting them with enough fertilizers. i have my ppm running at about 1600-1700 and my ph levels are constantly checked and fixed.

this isnt true at all and only applies for cfls!!!! u do this with any other bulbs and ur results will be less than optimal!

Very true Rasta , CFL's have to be close to take advantage of their low lumen (low intensity) light output , HID lighting too close stress's out our girls . Watch your leaves they will tell you :)

I am not too familiar with HPS, but I have been growing for going on 20 years. I may be wrong, because non-dense buds can be caused by many things, including strain, lack of nutes,
too much nutes, or lack of light. Based on your info, a 400 watt HPS in a 4 X 4 tent seems like it may be too small. You're only looking at 3437.5 lumens per square foot. Not enough
for flowering, if you're looking for 100% efficiency. Ideally, 1000 watt HPS lights would go into a square meter tent, which is 3.25 X 3.25, and 13006 lumens per square foot. You will
(strain dependant) get the dense buds you are looking for. And maximum yields that your strain(s) will allow. I'd put a 1000 watt light in there, or limit your light to an area of 25" X 25",
getting you within a few lumens of 13006 lumens per square foot that a 1000 would do in the square meter, and you'll still get the same yield, and the denser buds (strain dependent).

I hope this helps.
