Do you really need to start off with such costly items or is there a cheap setup you can get for beginners. I know you started off fresh, but you obviously have a bit more spare cash that I do. :-P

I have always wanted to try glass blowing.

from what I"ve read the main reason it's expensive is because of the kiln.. because of this it really limits it to people who are serious not just pondering this skill.

Yea, I'm seeing there really isn't much room for "well, ill give glass blowing a shot and see if I like it. "

Just read through the thread to catch up. I really like your bat work. The ones with blue in them are SICK! Haha I read in the beginning you didn't see yourself upgrading and here you are, upgrading. Must be a great hobby. Would love to do it, but like everyone says, too high of start up costs.

You can get enough equipment and glass to make 50 pipes for around:

- Torch: $500 (Red Max minimum)
- Kiln: $600-$800 (Bluebird XL is nice)
- Various tools, bowl pushes, graphite paddles, tweezers, tungsten rods, etc..... $300
- Oxygen tanks $150 plus $20 a refill
- Propane tank $40 plus $18 a refill
- Oxygen/Propane hoses & regulators & flashback arrestors: $150
- Glass: $200 Boro assortment from MGA and then a sampler pack of frit and sampler pack of color rods add $100 and $100

That's about it really...... My best advice to anyone who wants to get into glass is look online and see if you can find a glass blowing class near you. Probably is one close by. Try it, see if you like it, then invest.

I'm going to try and sell the dozen pipes there for $250 this weekend at some glass shops. Going to try and get another 12 made up before Saturday afternoon too that way I have two cases. (A case is 12, right? haha). If not my PayPal account works again, $25 each shipped ;)

Those look way better then my first tries. keep it up. Practice making pulls and try some basic clear spoons for shape practice. the blue tubing is easy to use, the green SUCKS! I use red maxx also. some people dont like it but, i love mine.
