hey bob, thanks for taking the time to help those of us just starting out. got a couple of questions, but here's a breakdown of my setup thus far for reference: i'm doing a rubbermaid grow for stealth etc. two 42 gal rubbermaids stacked one on top of the other, bottom/top cut out, spray painted with two layers of black (for light leakage) and last layer with white to reflect but not heat up like mylar would. light-wise i've got 6 48 watt cfl's mounted about 3 inches from the plants. i'm only growing two plants, so correct me if i'm wrong, but i think that should be enough for only two. they've both popped and we're on about day 5 now. growin mangos from nirvana btw. for smell i've got a passive intake cut into bottom right corner of bottom rubbermaid with 2 pc fans pulling air through 2 diy carbon filters at 80 cfm. as for medium, i'm using miracle grow potting mix which says it has food for 3 months and perlite in it.

alright, now here's questions:
1. does the white spray paint reflect enough for the plant to utilize any lost lumens or should i put some mylar in?
2. will the pc fans with carbon filters provide enough air circulation? also, will two diy carbon filters these-> https://www.rollitup.org/do-yourself/101248-best-diy-ez-walmart-carbon.html get rid of the smell from two flowering mangos?
3. do i need more lights?
4. what ph should i set the distilled water to with the miracle grow potting mix? i read the potting mix is like 4.7 in smb's grow 8 ounces for under $100...
5. what should i use for nutrients for vegging? flowering? does the miracle grow "food for 3 months" matter or should i find something asap?

that's all i can think of for now. thanks again bob!

Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it. I have one more question, how long do I have from the time that my plant shows it's sex as male to the time that it pollenates my females? I have been flowering for a week now and 2 of my 3 plants have grown pistils. I have to go out of town for 4 days. I assume I should be fine but just want to make sure. Thanks again.
well, it can happen in as soon as a week...you should be fine...

Sorry for the late reply!

1.)The white paint will do just fine! No need to worry about lining the box with mylar...but mylar is a better reflective material...
2.)I'd probably add at least a small cheap fan of some sort, just for added air circulation! The filters should work, but it may not be able to get rid of ALL of the odor, maybe an ONA(Odor-Neutralizing Agent) block would help...
3.)Those lights should do, but remember to switch the spectrum when going into flower!
4.)Distilled water is usually at a safe pH for plants, but try to keep it around 6.3-6.5...
5.)It probably won't last three months, but I wouldn't give them any supplementary nutes until at least 3 weeks after they sprout...and when you do start, begin at 1/4 recommended strength and increase in 1/4 intervals every week, as for brand...So many to choose from, I'd recommend General Hydro, Advanced Nutrients, or Fox Farms...

What do you mean they won't last 3 months? And what do you mean by changing the spectrum? in smb's book he doesn't talk about it at all.

Hey SLB, this would be my first grow, I'm starting from clone and its an OG kush but am not sure about the pheno. I've been doing some LST on this one cuz i've seen good results from the journals ive read. I've fed nutes twice now and i'm using Floranova Grow formula feedings are Ph'd at 6.8 and soil run off is just a little below(hard to tell with my ph tester) Not sure if my problem is a nut burn of deficiency, any and all help would be greatly appreciated. BTW its a soil grow.

The nutrients in the soil probably won't last that long, but they will last a while!
As for switching the spectrum...I'll give you a quick run-down!
Cannabis plants in the seedling and vegetative stage prefer light that is more "bluish-white" in color, described by cfl's as, "cool white or daylight", while cannabis plants in flowering prefer a more "redish or orange" color of light, known as "soft white or warm white" in cfl's

What kind of pH tester do you have? It looks like it may be a pH problem...and by the slightly yellow tips of some leaves, I'd say a very slight nute burn as well...

ah, gotcha. well i looked at the potting soil again and it says food for 6 months and i think it's 20-15-10 or somewhere around there. i know 20 nitro. do you think i'd be good with just adding 2 soft white cfl's and leaving the other 6 in there?

I have a Liquid chemical tester, the kind people use for pools. Its pretty much the only thing that fits my budget.

Hi all, I'm 2 weeks into the flowering stage of my first grow and would be really gratefull to recieve any advice or feed back on my current setup, which is as follows:

Grow room is 1m * 1m * 1.7m high. The grow is inside a closet in a spare room and it vents into the attic space, i pull cooler ambient air in from the other side of the attic using ducting.

Maxibright 400 watt ballast with 400w sodium bulb.

Metaglo mylar sheeting.

150mm inline fan (exhaust).

6"Clip on fan (ventalation).

2-4' Chains w/ S hooks.

2*Grasslin segmental timers.

Thermometer & Humidity dial.

Terra Professional Soil.

5 Litre standard round pots.

Canna Terra Flores.

Seeds: Blue Cheese Barneys Farm (Feminized).

I've inherited this grow so to speak; a friend tried himself and failed producing approx 6 ounces from 6 plants, all were grown in normal garden centre compost and each plants was nearly 1.2m tall, using a 250w sodium bulb and feeding his plants baby-bio during the both the vegative & flowering stage!!! Luckily, a healthy plant was taken during the vegetive stage and placed in another closet under a 250w blue crl bulb. 9 cuttings from this mother have been successfully vegetated for a total of 4 weeks and since then they have been thriving in the above mentioned room for 2 and a half weeks on a 12/12 cycle. They currently stand 2 feet tall, with buds forming rapidly, crystals are already abundant forming on both the leaves and the buds. Every 3rd day each plant gets 5ml per litre of canna flores nutes added. The plants are kept a minimum of 8" away from the lamp and the room temp is a consistant 27oC and 50% humidity during lights on. I'm thinking of starting to use some pk 13/14 also? Any feedback or advice on the above would be warmly accepted.

Many thanks.

Pistils can change colors very quickly, and it may be perfectly normal...but I would need see some pics to verify if there is a problem occuring...

It would be ok, but if you really wanna' utilize your setup to it's full potential, you would need change the spectrum of the lights to better suit the plant's needs at a specific stage.

Well, you would have to switch nutrients from a vegetative fertilizer to a bloom/flowering fertilizer...
A plant needs aprrox. 12-14 hours of light and 12-14 hours of darkness to trigger flowering, which is the natural light cycle during fall/autumn in most places around the world.

You would be able to do 8 plants at the most in there. I'd use 3 gallon buckets, these are perfect for the job, probably veg them for 3-4weeks. You should be able to cover all the plants with a 400 in that space!

man, your gonna need a more accurate meter, they have some pretty good deals on Ebay, I saw some descent digital pH meters for around $30.

I wouldn't chop them off..."Bourdeaux mixture" can be useful for controlling gray mold. A spray containing copper, Bourdeaux mixture, and a beneficial organism called Bacillus subtilis is effective against downy mildew. Spraying with bicarbonate of soda, organic horticultural oils, and sulfur can kill powdery mildew.
