Getting rid of root aphids

Root aphids showed up in my veg room about a month ago. First off, my veg room is ebb and flow tables with 3x3x4 rockwool cubes. I have been treating them with Azamax, because thats what I used to kill off my spider mites (I had a serious problem with them). I was giving each cube a top down drenching with a solution of 10 ml per gallon. The plants showed no signs of stress, and i continued to do this every 5 days, but this only slowed down the colonization of them. So today I made up a new solution of 1/2 oz of Organicide to 1 gallon of water. I did this in a five gallon bucket using 4 gallons of water with 2 oz of Organicide. You need to keep mixing this solution before you dip each cube. The Organicide is pretty oily, so mix it ALOT. I did this with each cube until the ebb and flow table was empty, then i filled it with the solution, and drained back into the bucket. I cleaned out the table, and as I was placing the plants back in, I dipped them in a new batch of solution. I checked everywhere on each one as I put it back in, and I only saw a couple moving slowly on the outside or top of the cubes. I waited about an hour them flooded my table to the top of the cubes to chase out any live ones, and I didnt see any. I will be doing this again in 2 days if no signs of stress appear, and follow that up immediatley with a pyrethrum bomb, then 2 days later with another dip solution. I will be recieving some Merit 75 WP in a week and throwing that in the rotation until these critters are gone. I learned from killing my spider mites, you have to dip/spray/bomb regularly. Find a potent enough sloution to kill the bugs and not the roots, then do it every 2-5 days. I will keep this posting updated each time I dip.

2 days later and the plants did not show signs of stress, so I dipped them again. There were very few aphids floating in the solution when I was done, and I think most of them were already dead and still stuck to the rockwool. looking good.

Okay, day 6 and one more dip, this time I used Merit 75 WP. I used 1 teaspoon of merit to 1 gallon of water. I added it to my reservoirs with the nutrients already mixed in at full strength. I wouldnt use this stuff anywhere after 2 weeks into flower, but its safe in the veg cycle. Keep this updated in a couple days.

Note-The smaller plants that were closest to the bomb had slight burning of the leaf edges. I have seen this before when I sprayed way to close to the plants with the same product, a Dr.Doom bomb. Im not a big fan of the bombs, and only use them when the battle is a serious one. Bombs dont do permanent damage by themselves and need to be used in a regimen of other products.

I feel your pain bro. I did a soil grow a while back and got them. What makes them really difficult to combat is there is not much information on them. I searched high and low. Finally I found enough information that I decided to do soil drenches. good luck!

I wouldnt use them together, but I would use them a couple days apart. Variety is a good thing to have when using these killing agents. I havent seen even one little bastard after I used the Merit 75 wp. I will post any new updates, but at this time the little bastards are no where to be seen.

thanks man i checked today and havnt seen any bugs at all..the other day i pulled each and every plant out and sprayed all of the dead aphids off of my roots so I could tell if any new bugs are invading and so far so good, and all I have had to use is the go nats and an occasional spray of fox farms "dont bug me" so im winning the battle so far!

potroast

Uses the Rollitup profile
Usually, one application with Merit via dunking or soaking the media will completely eradicate the root aphids. The active ingredient is imidicloprid, if you can find that in another product. Merit is made by Bayer.

Good luck

What do root aphids look like?? I haven't heard of them before.
I am seeing little bugs floating in my nutrient water. They don't seem to be sticking to the roots. I posted a thread thinking they are knats.

well I thought I was winning, I guess I just got rid of the adults because there is a shit load of new babies....Ive been all over it in the last few weeks....pulling each and every plant out and spraying the tops sides and bottoms of the rockwool cubes...what a pain in the ass..but ive managed to keep them down to a minimum and the plants seem to be doing fine. Then I read a few reviews of the clinic ive been getting clones from and found out many people have found root aphids in their clones, so now I know the source...But I have to say im letting the aphids push me out of hydro...the rock wool grows the algae and attracts the bugs and its just such a pain in the ass....gonna go with stinkbuds method: https://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeroponics/116859-harvest-pound-every-three-weeks.html seems to be the cleanest most bug free way to go..just wish I would have saw the thread before I went with the rock wool...Good Luck against those little fuckers.
