Do they monitor Electricity Usage?

Does anyone have more than anecdotal evidence that electricity usage is monitored? If so, can you direct me to a website or something?

I have gone from $180 to about $600/month and can't help wondering about whether my dramatic recent rise will raise red flags. And if so, with whom?

I'm under the impression that there must be probable cause for such privacy infringement. But in this day and age the Patriot Act seems to allow for just about anything.

Thanks

yes il tell you what you can do to help, fit your whole house out with low energy CFLs the ones that use 20w but put out 100w of light this should get your bill down depending how much lights you have in your house.

I think a $600 bill is probable cause. I could be wrong. just be careful dont throw anything suspicious in your trash. go far to a dumpster... they might have to watch you before they get a warrant... hell they may just knock on your door and ask whats going on. come up with an excuse or buy something that uses that muh electricity as a front.

put it this way say you purchased electric space heaters for 2 bedrooms in your house cuz the place is drafty. you have them set to come on for 12 hours at night and off during the day. would they issue a warrent for a guy doing that? And when they do and raid his home and find his space heaters....

well then who will be sued>?

i think your safe as long as you are not using like too too much. tell us how many lights. then we can know for sure. i would worry if your are using comercial amounts of power in a small house,

2 electric space heaters would not add $460 a month and maybe its hot where he lives. and if not the will look at his gas bill also and if that is norm than no space heaters would be needed

I've got 3 of these machines in a room that is 10x6x10.
BC Northern Lights
I also have a "mothership" by same company.

Each Producer has 2 400w HPS lights. That's 6 total. Also, the machines run 4 small fans each. The mothership is a 400MH light. I have some low watt flourescents up high in room for clones plus a squirrel cage fan connected to filter.

I'm harvesting my Grape Ape/Lambsbread yield today, after only 5 wks of flowering. Yield looks to be a poundish but manufactures say that with practice I can expect 1/5lbs every 6 wks.

But man, I just can't help wondering about whether i'm being profiled for my $400/mo jump in bill.

Don't let them scare you fool. Just make sure you pay your bill on time. Do not give them any reason to review your account. Like for instants a non current account.

I am aobut to purchase two stealth grow cabinets, not worried about power consumption just making sure bill is paid. Maybe even a little early.

this is with out a doubt reason for alarm. A dramatic increase like this will almost certainly go noticed by the electric company. There are several companies across the country that datamine houses for just this sort of jump in electric bill. You are a picture perfect example of what they are looking for. They cant get a warrant of this, but you can be certain they are aware of the increase, and all eyes will be on you. As I have always said, cops will find a way to get the warrant once they know you are growing.

flowered Nov. 29th Flushed the 6th/Jan. Trikes are 75% brown.
bought the GA at a club in SF.

The BC machines are pretty damm efficient, i'll give them that. But they run over $3K per machine. Stll, I'll have a harvest every 2 wks of at least a pound. SHould quickly offset costs for the machines. It was pretty funny the day they all arrived to my neighborhood in a big delivery truck with crates. luckily no neighbors around.

seems to me that PGE (like FEDEX when I ship to my patients) does not mind the extra revenue increase. not that they have the power to refute the gov't, but i would suspect that they would make it harder to make available such info as electricity usage to monitoring companies.

don't you think they would just have the attitude of "hey, he pays his bill on time, it ain't my business and stop asking me to monitor my customers".

no, i really dont think they do, considering the government already pays for them to do the datamining and the first place. Your extra 400 bucks a month doesn't make an impression on their income.

google grow house bust in your area they tell you how the grower gets busted in most cases and the ones geting caught 90 percent of the time are stealing power,or the cops are there for some other reason and stumble on the grow. I wouldent worry to much but I would worry better to be safe than sorry. change out all your house lighting with cfls and cut electricity in other places.A little space heater is 1500 watts min.Maybe just run 2 lights for a month or two then add from there. good luck and safe growing.....Jmac

People keep sighting the argument that "Hey, people use xxxx watt shit all the time, and cops dont come busting down there door". Thats true, but they didnt triple there electric bill in one month either. Cops arent looking for high bills, they are looking for big leaps, like going from 200/month to 600/month.
Have you considered using solar or wind power to harness some electricity and trim that bill a bit?

Does (my power company) have a privacy policy?
1. (my electric company) DOES have a privacy policy which is specifically designed to protect our customers and their details. We are also bound by the aforementioned Data Protection Act of 1998.

If so, does it state that (my power company) will not
divulge customer information (power usage, personal information, etc.)
to any outside party without a proper warrant?

2. NO personal data will be divulged to anyone outside of our organisation without the specific permission of the Customer; with a warrant; or a specific order from a Government Agency, again as covered by the Data Protection Act of 1998. If you read this it specifically states (under the Subject Access Request section) that any personal data may only be retrieved
for the person it pertains to or a Government Agency (such as the Police) who occasionally request such data.

If not, does (my power company) voluntarily report
"abnormal" power usage to law enforcement agencies without provocation?

3. I can assure you that (my electric company) DOES NOT, under any circumstances, monitor and report our 6 Million customers power consumption for anything other than OUR business requirements (we are busy enough as it is!).

For the VERY VERY limited occasions/situations when we are asked to supply information to a Government agency we only respond to the questions asked, most likely examples being: tracing missing persons or deducing the occupier of a house in a specific time period in Rent disputes.

There is more information readily available on (my electric companies website) or alternatively the OFGEM web site (The Office of Gas & Electricity Markets) Ofgem HOME the government sponsored watchdog for the Utilities industry may offer you more information.

More on power consumption and privacy rights:

(Ganja Lawyer)
....the Privacy Act and 4th Amendment protects utility companies from LEO searches w/o probable cause. (in the US) Except I had heard in some places utility records are PUBLIC- giving LEO (and everybody else) access...
if such matters WERE available to the general public then it would also be available to LEO (w/o a warrant).

(Lothar)
Unlike the US, Canadian hydro companies are bound by a contractural privacy agreement not to disclose anything to the police without a warrant. Meter readers who try and rat out suspicious usage houses can be fired for this.

They don't "red flag" anyone unless the usage is suddenly jumped up by like 300% - in that case, they phone you to make sure you know about it.

They will also contact you if you suddenly start using dangerous amounts of electricity, as though you have reached the 85%+ of your house\'s rated amperage.

Other than that, they don't care.

As for warrants, the police must obtain a warrant for the electrical usage first, and then a warrant for your house, but the Supreme Court ruled long ago that even electrical usage of 3-400% compared to similar dwellings in the neighborhood is "suspicious only\" and not grounds to search.
Police….. are currently trying to coordinate with the hydro companies, insurance companies …. are mainly concerned with hydro theft.

The hydro companies are often slow to detect the theft, and that's why you can get away with it for a year or so. They are hoping to get them on board to investigate suspicious activities like local power drains sooner, and they are happy to do this since hydro theft is such an expense and hassle.

(Power theft) ….is a crime and they will report that to their inspectors if they can't get a reasonable explanation, or at least have you acknowledge that you are now actually using the power.

Sudden jumps in (large) power usage might be flagged, also sudden reductions in power...Raising usage gradually is easy and you might as well just to be safe.
