If you're short on cash you can use CFLs, but in Australia we lack a lot of the cheap DIY options that make this option viable in the US. If you go CFLs you will end up spending more money trying to optimize an inferior technology.
A 250W HID light will grow out 5 small plants, however these are quite uncommon in Australia, along with the 125W, and costs almost as much if not more than a 400W.
If you're laundry is more than 1m2 then unless you're going to be going with HIDs you will need a tent, be it diy or ready made. Even a DIY enclosure will likely cost $20+ if you don't have suitable materials lying round.. At which point you need to think if it's not just worth getting the more powerful light, especially considering that if you're growing a sativa (I'm guessing if it had an 8 month life unless you just put it out real early) you might only be cropping out 3 times a year, and if you're a regular smoker the small yields you will have with lower intensity lights simply won't get you by.
My 2c after wasting my money trying to be cost effective and stealthy with CFLs.. Ugh

Ninja the PM's screws up once you press send. It goes to a screen saying some error of some sort. You mentioned about getting some decent genetics for my next grow. Do you think white rhino is no good? I like to be belted so i thought it was going to be what i like but am happy to be corrected. I still have about 6 fem'd rhino seeds so i hope its ok.

hubby and i are nightly smokers, so that's why we are looking at growing ourselves - sick of trying to buy some only to get sold crap or cant get any... there is currently none on ebay atm.. ( just searched for 400w HIDS) how much do they increase the power bill?

Hey Rock, i have a 400W setup for sale if ur interested.
The box & bulb has done 16 weeks of 12/12.
I got it to cover an extra plant on my last grow that i hadnt counted on looking after.
You can easily get 2 more crops off the light (wont blow, just degrades light quality) and years of use out of the ballast.
It would suit ur style of growing and help improve ur yield..
My asking price is $100 for the box, bulb & shade.
I'll even bring it over n check on the Rangess & show u a trick or 2 for Harvest?

haha nooo - i work in newcastle... i know to many ppl in singo... i meant in dollars for the power bill - im averaging a power bill around $300 - $500 - what would this light increase the bill to roughly....

ok - so with my plants so little should they still be in 24 hours of light and when they hit flowering cut the hours back... also what fertiliser do you use? is there any better than others - I have MAX FEED cause its high in nitrogen... how long do you think before they return to health with the leaves?This is the new ballast i got:

Ninja you are incredibly generous. I will decline only as i really want a small operation. I know i will never get the buds that a HID can give me but i am trying to just get a small amout to keep me sane. Its a shame as i would love the advice on chopping the rangess and also what i have inside and also other things but i am sure our paths will cross eventually. I dont know if Bill is listening in but he may be interested. He is just setting up again and i think he would use the equipment much better than i. He is located up an hour Nth of Sydney. Prob near Gosford.
