so here's the comparison of the plants right before i chopped them, i'm leaving the bigger one in to purple more... drumroll please, the wet weight verdict on the leaf experiment:
Kush with all of its leaves: 41g wet
Kush without most fan leaves: 50g wet

this won't be a huge difference when its all dry, but that's good enough for me. the plants started out and remained the same size, but the leafless kush just looks bombier! judge for yourself.

My guess on dry bud weight would be

with leaf: 13 grams
without leaf: 18 grams

I haven't grown Kush before so I am not familiar with how dense the buds are but thats my guess.

I'm fine with that, these were just a little experiment, I like PK in SOG. If they had been a few inches taller goin in, they'd be more worth my while in the future. the nugs are pretty dense, not rocksolid or anything tho.

Now i'll see soon enough how the last small kush compares. It was bigger to begin with, and the buds look amazing. I'd like to get a little statistics goin when I chop it, maybe i'll switch to SOG.

Yea, SOG has been on my mind too. I guess it depends on how they do in the aero setup. If they do well then after next grow I will have plenty of TW and will try a SOG with ten PK plants. I will take a cutting from the best one for a mother.

That TW mother is not doing well. It is healthy and slowly growing but I remember it was not one of the best cuttings. Im not sure if I am going to keep it. Would you want to flower it? Maybe experiment with a single sog/

yeah, i'm down! but for now, try aerating (poking) the soil a bunch. is it getting dry enough between waterings?

alright, the results are in.
when i trimmed off the fan leaves 3weeks before harvest, I yielded 9 grams of dry bud. The control plant that kept its leaves till the end yielded 7.5 grams dry. now we'll just have to see how they smoke. pics soon on these

I just got a sample of Gravity, so i'm trying it on the last SOG kush (the bigger one) to see what happens. my hydro shop homie told me (between many bowls, and some delicious hash tea) that it was basically death in a bottle, that it sucks all of the leaves nutrients into the buds. we'll see i guess. :peace:

I thought the idea was to remove nutrients towards the end.

Check out what I found about using Gravity,

"How it works I'm not sure, may contain an ethylene-like compound and most likely a lot of hormones derived from the kelp (cytokines, auxins, gibberelins ,etc). Since cytokines travel upward from the roots to the stems naturally, it is most likely based on that class of hormone. Zeatin is the most prominent cytokine in the plant world and most likely the prime ingredient since they are naturally derived. Gibberellins are of no use (unless you want the tallest piece of shit plant out there) and auxins tend to delay harvests while staying localized in the roots when applied to the roots (superthrive etc.). So to answer your question on HOW it does what it does, don't even bother. With hundreds of naturally occurring hormones in kelp and thousands of ratios to formulate, best just ignore the HOW.

I have used it on two of my past grows and it does work very well but be warned, more is NOT better! I like to start with a half-strength solution and work up from there. Humbolt County products are amazing but they often burn plants to death when used improperly or for no reason at all. My last crop I was over zealous and used PurpleMaxx in conjunction with Gravity without leaching the soil first. What a mess! Half of the foliage was gone in 3 days!
Best to always use it without nutrients and after you flush the soil. The company claims that Gravity (and other products) increase nutrient uptake. If this is actually whats going on or not, keep nutrient levels low when first applying, just in case!... and that goes for hydro as well."

yeah, i will still flush at the end as well, but gravity should utilize otherwise wasted nutes that are already in the edible plant form. i think the flush gets rid of the synthetic stuff, but thats really just a guess. great info on the gravity, +rep. that seems to be the gist of what i'm hearing "it works but go easy on it." well i gave my plant a full dose unknowingly. i had just flushed it so we'll see how its doing tonight.

Those look sweet goat, still some swelling left I guess.
thanks bro, I'm hoping this gravity stuff will help my buds lack of plumpness... but i'll be getting green crack soon enough so thats all history.

As I sit here comparing the many purple kush nugs and getting wasted on homemade hash, I am reminded of how grateful I am to this website, and to my favorite plant! After that subsided, I decided to get some fresh pics goin.

In veg things are kinda running low, but more are on there way from external sources. I'm now working with this in the clone area:

compared to this a few months back

oh well, at least the kush is looking like a happy bush

Great results with the trimming of the fan leaves. Pretty solid evidence right there that getting more light to the bud sites makes them bigger. Everything looks really good.

things seem to be going well with the budding plants. they're all sucking up water and looking healthy.

Here's the room:

The last big kush has some new growth from the big dose of nutes i gave it, looking great.

I haven't noticed too much visual difference with the small kush i used gravity on (phew), but the buds do fell crazy dense, who knows if its gravity?

And then there's the trainwreck:
