it realy isn't all that hard to start from scratch without a kit.
If you have a pressure cooker more ways are open to you, but you can eaily do brown rice cakes just with a boiling pot.
As for supplies you can get the
half pint jars from amazon real cheap and if you don't want to make holes in the lids (which are normally marked for use one time only, anyway), you can order the filter disks to put in, I see that as not needed.
Don't get suckered into using large jars, smaller jars incubate faster and are thus less likely to contaminate, make sure to take something with a straight neck so you can get your stuff out.
Plastic tub for fruiting chamber from a dollar store (Buy two and use the other one to make a glovebox)
Vermiculite - very cheap available from nursery/walmart/petshops
Perlite (optional and used in fewer teks but a must have if you are making brown rice cakes - you will still need verm then available from nursery/walmart (perlite costs about twice what verm does)
coco coir (often mixed with verm in a few recipies - but not an absolute requirement either... I would say only the verm is a must have, for small scale shrooming.
20ml injection and a few fat needles form pharmacy or feedstore (very cheap, 1 plus two needles costs me less than a dollar), you can use 10ml if you get one with a thick needle. Just say you need it to make agar plates for orchid seedlings, you can even google it a bit, so you don't flap your lips if asked a thing or two... my secret is jsut saying its for orchids etc, and if asked anything else I just say my methods are secret.
Rubber gloves or silicone gloves from the pharmacy... washing just never seems to get to all the germs under your nails... and my last set of golves were 12 pair for a dollar.
While at the pharmacy get some 3% peroxide (cheap as can be stuff that, like cents), and the highest proof alcohol you can get to disinfect outside of jars and hands etc.
My latest 16 jar outfit including ORGANIC (always get organic else you get FUNGICIDE) rye, cost me less than $40
You'll need 500g rye for 4 500ml jars... if you live ina country where they have 12 fingers, i'm sure you have some conversion calc... or just use google... just type; 500g in oz
If you can get horsepooh/straw or both, you can skip the verm/perl/coir trio...
