I have a small grow room, 20 inches by 20 inches. I have a 40w flc. light now. But I can buy a new HPS 150 watt sun system for 70$ shipped. Before I buy I would like to know if this is a good value?

I've got about the same size for inside till my outdoor crop... I'm going to 400W...
Inside sun has a 400 at $120. but I can't vouch for the quality, but it seemed fine... Like you, width is a major issue..I had to put my T5's +12's at a 45 degree angle... stupid wires....

It is a very good value for wattage / type vs cost. The best advice is to buy the best and most light you can afford. I originally looked at the same light you mention and was tempted by the low price, but opted for a 400W switchable MH/HPS for ~$200. If that's just flat too much $$, go with the $70 -- still an upgrade over your flourescents.

Think about the long-term, too. If I had it back, I'd go with a LED UFO at $470 -- a pinch, yes, but the energy costs are much lower, longer bulb life, cooler, etc -- If you plan to grow regularly, you'll recoup your costs easy by going LED.

Thats why I didn't vouch for them.. they may work fine..then when you need a new bulb/ballast you're screwed because its a bastardized setup.....

As for LED, I've read a lot, but never really see any greater result pics.. plus its still a newer grow method... Lets go steal the NY city new years eve ball... Woo hoo... led's.......

Good advice! Buy a 400w if you can.

Oh No! Bad advice. I have a UFO and it truly a Piece Of Sh!t. That is not my opinion it is my results from actually doing it.

400w HPS = All the killer bud you can smoke
90w UFO = Some really scrony leafy tiny buds that are only worth smoking if you can find nothing else.
5 x 90w UFO = More lousy buds with no power savings at all.

In fact my last grow I put the 90w UFO in that little space that is in the light shadow due to the exhaust vent. The buds that got LED + HPS light were much worse that the HPS only buds.

Wow.. thanks for the warnings..

Twistyman... not sure what you mean about bastardized setups and not being able to get new bulbs? For the LED? Or the $70 HPS deal..? Can't imagine you mean my 400W...

I think the last guy meant to say there is a $20 econolight 150w hps...

It's just as good as the little sun systems light, but it just isn't in a grow configuration until you change it. Either way the $70 one you were looking at is fine, it's a good deal and will probably last a lifetime. All the little 150's are magnetic ballast lights and they tend to last 10 years plus easily. (not the bulbs, but the rest of them)

i use the sunsystem hps 150... great light for small grows. its my only light source and performs fantastic, outperforms the almost 400 watt cfl setup i had, for less than half the cost to run.
i would recommend it to anyone.

I was never able to keep my 150 watt'r that close to my plant tops without leaves curling...12-13" was where I kept it
