Fungus gnat experiment #569

I was watching a program on History channel called Ancient Aliens. The topic of the show was how alien microorganisms influence our planet and the role they've played throughout earth's existence. They sent a collection device up into the stratosphere and collected microorganisms. These microbes were ranging of all different sizes, but what I found most interesting is that anything that has particle size of 20 micron and up is here to stay. It's physically impossible for that microorganisms to re-enter the stratosphere.
So this collection device they sent up, when they retrieved it and analyzed the collection plates, they found organisms that were up to 220 micron. That's pretty wild if you think about it, earthly adaptations has alien origins.
So next time you see a fungus gnats, run, that's shits alien engineering.

I wonder sometimes if there aren't new types of fungus gnats that are predisposed to attack cannabis lol. My grow store guy swears that they're so bad this year because some commercial pesticide was banned last year causing an outbreak of gnats. Well,,, I dunno,, maybe, but I think he's too high lol. He's growing a couple of Rasta Jeff's best Irie Genetics strains. But,, he does have a point. He has an aeroponic setup in store and he's still fighting the damned things. He thought my pantyhose was silly, but, my gnats are gone. If I do see them I'm terminating their asses.

No gnats in sight from new coco it's coming up on 3 wks.

Now I'm certain gnats in coco are introduced or fly in and lay eggs unlike soil where you're almost guaranteed in getting them in it?

@CarolinaPotheadsNew that dude in the grow store isn't the one that's got them under control without using poison or spending money or looking at gnat free future :bigjoint:
Grow store guy tried to sell me some stuff that was $59.99 a 24oz bottle. He said you have to use it every watering to just keep down the population. It's not any of the other stuff I've read about. Hell, it might work. But, low tech cheapo with real science to back it has them fkn gone! I intend to keep opening the tops up once a week for awhile to spray the top with H2O solution. This might not be a solution for bigger grows but for now it's working for me. They should sell fabric pots that zip up to the stalk. Even if you have to tuck something in the gap it would be a big helper. I need to make up an example and sell it to the cannabis companies. This thread proves there is a market for them

If you're needing idea's it's something I've thought about.

I've learned if something isn't convenient to use it won't get used continuously.

Anti Gnat pot V1.0.0
Let's say a felt pot for easy speaking and a strainer bag with a draw string sewn in.
Sew the mesh to the top of the felt pot so you've a draw string to tighten around the stem...Or a neoprene Puck?
A neoprene puck around the stem would give a secure fit and it allows growth without strangling the plant.

Draw strings don't seal great when you pull them right up, they create bunching, a neoprene puck having a bigger diameter would make it better suited to loose that bunching, with a little recces in the puck to prevent a pia trying to tighten it, the bunching and draw string would fit snugly keeping it gnat tight...does that make any sense :eyesmoke:

@Spiderfarmerled hello you need some pots with a mesh around the top and draw string to seal around the stem, that would allow watering while keeping gnats and other pests out.

A velco version of just the top that would fit any pot would be a good option, I've a couple of idea's for it if there's any real possibility of you getting it off the ground, I'm not a marketing guy but what grower wouldn't want gnat free pots?

Ahh yes.. The old fungus gnat grow shop conspiracy..

Plant gnat/mite eggs into all the medium and grow systems at your shop, and then you'll make an extra +100k selling IPM products. All the growers come back needing extra help few weeks to a month later, for some darned reason... ;)

Theyre going crazy in one of my plants in flower. One was outside the panty and several in the bait in the stem tied area. I dont know where but theyre escaping somehow but only a percentage of them. Most are trapped and theres a massive graveyard towards the middle of outside of pot where the panty sits flush over the fabric pot.

Many many bugs and they suddenly look like root aphids. My clones that were pantied from start a month ago I just dont see any but temp really matters.

I think its important to double line the pot by putting pot into panty all the way. Then use the long slack to turn it inside out kinda, and have the a double layer. Any snag will make a hole big enough to escape.

I put a grocery bag over the pot tucked around bottom so the panty can slide right on or else it snags fabric. Just pull bag out and double line like this.

Man, I wonder if they can sneak out if theyre young enough and now trying to find a way back in like a dumbass and caught in the jell trap. Wtf. Maybe plastic is better but dont want rootbound plants or just idk.

Hope is still there I just KNEW any snag would screw me and this why I go overboard with the but jell trap. I knew it wasnt for nothing lol.

I had free hypoaspis miles mites shit I get worse and worse remembering what its called. I even has a funny way to remember it. Anyway they just dont keep up. They exploded in numbers along with decreasing gnats but ya. I think I got root aphids from basement theres just lots of different bugs there and wouldnt doubt it.

Only gnats in flower room but now probably aphids they dont look the same, Ive become a gnat expert somewhat through this. Gnats smaller narrow body fluffy wings and these are short fat stubby rounded flat wings flush to body.

Pheww’ looks like athena ipm kills what ever the hell they are. Well I just did the other plant thats for sure gnats.. I cant tell if its just gooping them up with water surface tention just not able to move or if its killing them. Some plants have too poor access to get the flyers bound to leave a few.

This one in pic is good though I dont see any flyers instead of way too many. As for the hypoaspis they helped a lot but eventually didnt do nothing to fight the flying numbers. Maybe as a add-on but yea. This aint over sadly. Oh and I see a outside gnat in the other plant.. Theyre getting out some how. Its not double lined though its my first attempt plant.
