During a Tuesday press conference, Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, said five of 28 maneuvering thrusters failed to perform as expected during the Starliner’s docking procedure and engineers had identified a total of five small helium leaks, some of which were detected before the spacecraft launched. Helium is used in the capsule’s thruster firing procedure.
Pre-launch:
Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, said even if a suspect shirt-button-size rubber seal in the plumbing leading to one specific thruster failed completely in flight — resulting in a leak rate 100 times worse than what’s been observed to date — the Starliner could still fly safely.
“Should we be wrong about something, we could handle up to four more leaks,” he said. “And we could handle this particular leak if that leak rate were to grow, even up to 100 times in this one (propulsion module).”
I ain't no rocket surgeon, but this reminds me of slow testing for COV so the cases will slowdown. Steve forgot to knock on wood when he said that.
