Why run autos in a tent?

I see a lot people growing autos in tents these days. My question is, if you already spent the money on a light proof environment, why would you grow autos inside of a tent? Is it predatory marketing to newbs? Is it bad bro advice? What makes people want to start out with an inferior, harder to grow plant? The logic is mind boggling because they still run timers. Sure, I'll throw an auto in a tent with some photos and let her ride but the tent is set up for photos. Please educate me!

Just got done setting up an outdoor greenhouse to run autos in. It's looking like we'll get one more frost, than we should be in the clear in west central Minnesota.

I grow autos indoors because i can run them perpetually ( 2-3 week starts between ) regardless of weather and such. No need to rely on outside lighting from sun - you can run longer lighting cycles than outside ( 20/4 etc. )

Because in my house it is 75⁰F with 29% Humidity.

In my tent I can control the environment.

I think autos are easy to grow. Just stick the seed in some soil and let it rip. No light timers to worry about, You can open the tent when the lights are out without worrying if they will Hermie or not.

I run my lights 24/7. But I do have them turn down to low a few hours a night.

My first grow was an auto and my second is also.

The only reason I ever got into growing autos was because I live too far north to have photos finish before the snow flies. With our power at over 30¢/kwh I'm not running light at even 18hrs/day for a full run so only photos indoors for me. Now there's a hemp farm just down the road from me so no more outdoor growing any more. All full of bugs stuck in the buds and all over anyhow so who needs the hassle. The farmer lets me have free hemp flowers anyway so I can get some CBD there. Looks like there's lots of tops out there left over so may go check it out.

Got some opium poppy seeds to grow a different kind of medicine outside this year. :)

I think also some is breeder based: its a lot more profitable for a breeder if the customer cant make clones. In my case, wanted to run Novarine but could get seeds from elite, they were sold out and not making anymore. But they do sell an auto version id like to try, even if it irks me a bit. The Novarine seeds regulars i got seems like they were old, none of them survived seedling stage.

Autos always being inferior isnt an ironclad case, theres some very good autos around but i get why some scorns them, theres a lot of shitty autos around and much worse in the past.

Another reason to run autos is if you have power limitations; if you run a 20/4 cycle you end up giving 2/3ds more light per day which means you can run less watts per m. Less watts per m means you can grow a bigger area with the amps on your installation. Though the same can be achieved having two flower spaces on a flipflop schedule.

Price per pound there’s a lot of money to be made from cannabis seeds. Marketing/advertising has much to do with it, new growers can be led to believe autos are quicker and easier to grow. From a sales perspective it’s a smart way to keep demand high by putting an expiration on supply. Autos are fun to grow but I believe new growers should gain knowledge from the experience of growing photos first, only because their much more forgiving and failure is the best way to learn. When the plant switches to flower everything should be on point.

I got into using STS to make fem seeds and successfully made my own fem autos. Have also done photo plants and from 7 tries got viable pollen 7 times from both a single branch to whole plant sprays.

Better living thru chemistry!

Why DMs? Ask in here and a few more may learn something useful. For every member that might read about it in the open forum there will be a dozen lurkers that will likely see it as well. There are already lots of posts about using STS likely in Advanced Marijuana Cultivation but it's not so hard to do that I couldn't answer a few questions. I'm pretty sure I've authored a few of those earlier posts too.

newb here. i'm on my third run, and i grew autos in a 4x4btent for the first two runs. this third run is 1/2 autos and 1/2 photos. i'm planning on growing the autos outdoors and perhaps a couple of the photos as well. the tent will be used for the best 2 girls, once i've sexed the photos and given them a chance to veg a bit.
growing autos has been easy for me. i love to garden, so i have a bit of a green thumb to begin with... but even so, i have learned lessons on autos that i know will serve me well in the photos that are now germinating. how much to water, how often, how to feed, how to LST, how to defoliate, how to check for harvest readiness, how to monitor (and treat) pests like gnats, etc etc etc. the idea that autos are "hard" to grow hasn't panned out for me. i think there are a LOT of folks in the forums who have problems growing autos because they've likely never grown ANYTHING before and growing plants isn't second nature to them.
growing autos has also allowed me to turn over two runs in six months: run 1 germinated in october, harvested in january. run 2 germinated in december and harvested in march. i *wanted* the shorter grow cycle. and my eight autos have yielded me ~1.5# of perfectly smokeable weed that i've quite enjoyed for myself, as well as sharing with friends. i have about 20 oz of weed oil in the freezer too, for edibles.
would i have yielded a lot more weed with photos? no doubt. but i didn't *need* buckets of weed. i have plenty as it is, even if all my current seeds go tits up, to last me for months.
initially i purchased autos because yes, they were marketed as a shorter grow cycle, and i literally knew no one personally who had grown weed before so i did about 15 minutes of research online re: photos, regs, fem, autos, and decided that autos were a safe bet.
growing them in a tent allows me to control the environment and contain the odor - that was key as the first run has 2 skunk varieties that stunk the first day of flower and only got more intense in the following weeks.
here's my question: why does anyone care what anyone else is growing, whether it's photos or autos? i'm a "live and let live" kinda person and frankly i literally have never once in any of my waking moments gave one flying fuck what anyone else is growing. :D

I want you to come back after your photo harvest, just ridiculously baked, and re read your whole post with your new insight. So you got lied into autos, had good success, and don't give a shit about other people's grows. Noted.

no one lied to me...
and i don't care about other people's grows wrt photo or auto. i DO love seeing other people's pictures, asking questions or advice when i'm having an issue, or answering a question that i feel i can contribute to. but i've never cared about if other people are growing photos or autos, that's all. and i don't understand why it's discussed regularly here on the forums. i always shrug my shoulders like, "eh" when i see the topic come up. this is the first time i've chimed in with my experience. and honestly, i'll likely just go back to shrugging my shoulders with "eh" when i see it come up again...because it WILL...seems like some things just lend themselves to stirring up debates and some folks really enjoy the debate. that's all.

A bit off topic on the thread, dont wanna disrespect ops topic. Im going to read up on it a bit more (if you have a good starting point/thread it would be welcome) and maybe ill get back to you if i have questions. Asked here cause youve always seemed to be a friendly and helpfull soul from posting. My main doubts is about if its worth it which u already have answered and if you ever had hermied plants coming from the treated seeds
Cheers and peace

I just did a quick search and reviewed the instructions in this thread and they seem pretty accurate. Large fan leaves don't need to be sprayed and it's probably best to remove them tho not imperative. If you ended up buying pre-made stuff you don't want to waste any on fans.

Beautiful day here in northern Alberta so headed outside for a while to finish loading my trailer to make a dump run so I can use it to load my little boat up and maybe go fishing soon. Just good to get outside in the sun without 20lbs of winter gear on to be able to stay out for a while. :)

wouldnt low light at a higher distance(distance used for high light) cause the plants to stretch?
