What does everyone use for viewing trichomes?

You don't need anything more than a jewelers loupe if you're checking trichomes. You can go ahead and play around with gadgets like usb microscopes but it's not necessary.

In don't bother looking at trichomes. What I've observed over the years is that many who focus only on the trichomes harvest early. Trichomes are not as reliable as many make them out to be.

Interesting... I might try and get a macro lens? I've seen some beautiful picture people have done with macro photography. Until then, I'll just grab a loupe. I'll definitely be checking out the sparkly versus soft and snowy thing though. :)

If not trichomes, how do you know when you're gonna harvest? I mean, sure, the seed bank said 8 weeks but that might be too early still depending on other factors? I was thinking of waiting until about 75% amber. I know there's a "feel" thing people do but I don't know if I can figure that out just reading about it. That seems like an experience thing?

The reason people say trichomes aren't always the best is that you want to be viewing the trichomes on the calyxes when they are swollen and the pistils are receded into them. This is usually 9-10+ weeks after seeing pistils. A lot of newbies (like me on the grow I ruined) see amber around 6 or 7 weeks and start getting antsy. The whole plant has to tell the story and it's usually going to be longer than we want to hear. Also, some strains never really show amber much so you also need other context.

If you're into photography, a macro lens is a great addition (makes a nice portrait lens as well)
I've got a Canon 100mm/2.8 1:1 macro and have taken some fantastic close-ups but haven't ever used it to determine when to harvest

ahhhh, so when the trichomes are tall and amber, that don't mean as much and you need to wait until they go into the pool and get shrinkage first?

That would probably be pretty cool as phones have insane cameras now. I have a Ninyoon usb microscope but it's really hard to get a steady hand to snap pics.
