Barr: Trump's 'not my idea of a president'
Barr was asked during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper if he would get involved in a primary challenge against former President Trump and support another candidate if Trump ran, to which he replied, "Yes."

“Yes, I think the coming presidential election would be a good opportunity for the Republican Party because from my standpoint, the progressive left has — is sort of showing a sort of a totalitarian temperament,” Barr replied.

“I think the Republicans can win a decisive majority, but I don't think we can do it with Trump. He’s just too divisive a candidate," he added.

Barr was also asked about commentary he shared in his new book, “One Damn Thing After Another: Memoirs of an Attorney General,” in which he criticized the former president’s various actions during his presidency.

“He's not my idea of a president, and ... I felt he was going to lose the election because he was not controlling himself. He was allowing this pettiness to come through, and I feel it's one of his great failings,” Barr told Tapper, speaking of the former president.

“I think a lot of people agree with his policies. They like his strength and his directness. But to the extent they support them, it's despite these — this kind of obnoxious behavior, it's not because of it," he said.

Barr noted that he thought Trump “went off the rails” after losing the 2020 presidential election, and claimed that he did not listen to his advisers.

Trump tears into Biden amid Ukraine conflict
Former President Trump tore into President Biden during a rally in South Carolina on Saturday for his approach to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Trump pointed the finger at Biden for the Russian invasion, saying Russian President Vladimir Putin would have never started a war with him in office. He told supporters at the rally that the U.S. needs to stay out of war and that Biden still has a chance to keep Americans out of the conflict.

“Despite all of Biden’s weakness, cowardice and incompetence, there is still a path for him to end this tragedy without getting Americans snared into a gruesome and very bloody war,” Trump said.

He predicted that if the invasion continues, it will lead to another world war.

“This could lead, by the way, this could lead to World War III,” Trump said. “I see what’s happening. Because if you think Putin is going to stop, it’s going to get worse and worse. He’s not going to accept it and we don’t have anybody to talk to him.”

In response to the invasion, Biden has levied harsh sanctions against Russia and this week announced a ban on Russian oil, natural gas and coal imports.

Trump said the U.S. will not be able to end its dependence on Russian oil until it commits to “end Biden’s ridiculous war on American energy,” sounding a familiar note as Republicans have for months sought to blame the president and Democrats for rising gas prices by tying them to what they argue is a lack of energy independence under the Biden administration. Analysts, however, have attributed the high prices seen in recent months to supply and demand mismatches related to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We have to get our great energy works drilling, pumping, producing, mining and refining like never before,” Trump said.

He also went after Biden for last year waiving sanctions on the Russian firm behind the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a move that at the time drew pushback from Democrats and Republicans alike, who said the administration should take a harder stance on Russia. Biden last month announced sanctions against the company amid the building conflict in Ukraine.

Trump further criticized the Biden administration for its willingness to engage with countries such as Venezuela, Iran and Saudi Arabia to potentially make up for the void left by Russian oil imports. “And now Biden is crawling around the globe on his knees begging and pleading for mercy from Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela,” Trump said.

Trump said Biden was "groveling at the feet of the oil-rich and brutal Maduro regime,” referring to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Lawmakers have also criticized the administration for engaging with the countries over oil, saying the White House should not switch from dealing with one dictatorship to another to stabilize global energy markets.

Trump has previously called the Russian invasion into Ukraine “a holocaust,” though he praised Putin for his strategy in the days leading up to the conflict.

He's splitting the republican party in a time of war, not the democratic one. This war has had the same effect on American public opinion as in 1940-1941 when the Brits stood alone in Europe after Hitler invaded the rest and finally went after Russia. Much of their base is enchanted with the guns, guts, glory and fight for freedom by armed citizens, most of their base has been smitten, as have we. This is pretty obvious to even the casual observer, why since Putin called them Nazis, even American Nazis are interested! Trump on the other hand is pissing against the wind, even people who voted for him in 2020 knows he is pro Putin and there is no getting away from it. So maybe the democrats want Donald running around lose shooting off his mouth before they indict him in Georgia this summer, republicans testify against him and he blows up the GOP as best he can before being sentenced in Ga.
Best I can do! Most Americans rally behind the POTUS in time of war, especially this kind of war against a traditional enemy, Putin has become Hitler in the eyes of many. It is also a TV war in the internet age and we can witness it's horror, as well as the courage and resolve of it's people.

I have an interest in the fight for liberal democracy, whether in America or in Ukraine, in Ukraine it is a literal fight and one of historic and strategic importance. We are no mere observers either, we are at risk too, from the same enemy and that makes us participants at one level, same as in WW2. We may be attacked in many ways including the internet, or we could be nuked, it get a fellows interest!

i think the only thing trump will ever do to help the U.S. is divide the republican party so it is easier for democrats to take seats from them, and easier to keep a democrat in the whitehouse. if we could get a clear majority in both houses with a democratic president for 4 years, we could remake the entire country...pass federal voting standards to stop retarded regressive states from even trying to pass restrictive voting laws, pass some laws about womens rights that give them more control of their own fate, and takes away the control over women and their reproductive systems that wealthy white christian men seem to feel entitled to, make some real progress on repairing the infrastructure of the entire nation, and get some green alternatives to oil kicked into high gear...i honestly don't see the country surviving long under the republicans as they are now...they are not what they were even ten years ago.
i didn't like them then, but they weren't open supporters of white supremacy, they didn't make offensive racist statements in public, and they certainly didn't openly support dictators like putin...well, maybe they did all that shit, but they at least tried to cover it up, and apologized when they had to...they don't have the common decency to even act ashamed any more

Democratic group accuses Trump of breaking campaign law by not formally announcing 2024 run
The Democratic super PAC American Bridge accused former President Trump of breaking campaign finance laws on Monday, citing his spending on political funds without officially launching a presidential bid.

The group told The New York Times that it is filing a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission and using the former president's own words in the complaint.

“He should have to adhere to the law in a way that all other candidates do,” the group's president, Jessica Floyd, told the publication. “When he says ‘I’m going to do it a third time,’ that’s not flirting. That’s more than a toe dip.”

American Bridge specifically pointed to a quote Trump made last year in which he said, “I know what I’m going to do, but we’re not supposed to be talking about it yet from the standpoint of campaign finance laws."
Trump's team has hit back at the complaint.

“America is spiraling into disaster because of the Democrats’ failures, and instead of reversing course, they are busy filing frivolous complaints that have zero merit,” Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich told the Times.

According to federal finance rules, anyone who raises or spends over $5,000 in an effort to support a presidential campaign must file with the FEC.

The development comes as the former president continues to tease a potential 2024 presidential run, despite not officially throwing his hat into the ring.

On Saturday during a rally in South Carolina, Trump continued to float the idea of a run.

“In 2024 we are going to take back that beautiful, beautiful White House,” Trump said. “I wonder who will do that. I wonder. I wonder.”

Think open primaries in all 50 would help to curb radicalism? A quick and dirty solution that might keep the wing nuts out of the running.

no one votes for the fringe candidates, and they aren't any threat. the real threat is that mainstream republicans and quite a few democrats aren't really mainstream, they're at the extreme right or left of their parties acceptable limits, and are probably well beyond those limits in reality. democrats are just lucky in that they have a much smaller fringe element than the republicans do, and their activities and statements are slightly easier to sweep under the rug.

I really think that the Democrats have so much more competition that it is a to harder for the fringe candidates to keep their feet in the door before they get outed (see Tulsi Gabbard) when they try to make their bullshit moves.

Trump says he's 'surprised' Putin ordered Ukraine invasion
Former President Trump said he didn't think Russian President Vladimir Putin would go through with an invasion of Ukraine in an interview with The Washington Examiner published Tuesday.

“I’m surprised — I’m surprised. I thought he was negotiating when he sent his troops to the border. I thought he was negotiating,” Trump told the outlet in a phone interview. “I thought it was a tough way to negotiate but a smart way to negotiate.”
Putin sent more than 150,000 troops to the border of the Ukraine before he began a war that has already cost thousands of lives in three weeks.

“I figured he was going to make a good deal like everybody else does with the United States and the other people they tend to deal with — you know, like every trade deal. We’ve never made a good trade deal until I came along,” Trump said. “And then he went in — and I think he’s changed. I think he’s changed. It’s a very sad thing for the world. He’s very much changed.”

Trump addressed critics who have gone after him for calling Putin smart in his tactics leading up to the war.
“I’ve been very, very tough on Putin. I get a bad rap on that,” Trump told the outlet. “At the same time, I got along with him very well. But I got along with most [world leaders] very well.”

“I’ve been very critical of Putin from the standpoint of the pipeline, from the standpoint of raising billions and billions of dollars in NATO to protect, primarily, Europe against Russia," Trump added. "Nobody else did that.”
Since the war began, Russia has faced harsh repercussions with the U.S. sanctioning dozens of Russians and banning Russian oil imports.

Trump said at a rally in South Carolina he believes if the invasion doesn’t end soon it will lead to "World War III."
“This could lead, by the way, this could lead to World War III,” Trump said. “I see what’s happening. Because if you think Putin is going to stop, it’s going to get worse and worse. He’s not going to accept it, and we don’t have anybody to talk to him.”
