2018 Canadian outdoor strains of choice.

I hear you. If there was a chance of frost I would have held back but our weather is looking great right through May. The plants have been out a few days now and are just loving it. The cool thing I noticed that's different from putting bigger plants out is they are small enough that heavy winds don't affect them. I still have tomato cages for them but they don't even need them yet. I'll definitely do this again next year if the weather allows.

I suppose if I was planting 100+ plants I would likely eliminate any risk by putting out at the end of May but I'm just growing the 9 outdoor plants I'm allowed to grow legally.
I'm down to 29 Outdoor on my licence. More than that and I'm working like a dog. Even that much is hard to do properly.

Just as an update incase people are curious about good northern strains. I have two Big Nugs 'fast version' (an indica dominant cross between critical mass and big bud) and also two Killer Kush 'fast version'. I'll post pics of the Big Nugs first and then follow up with the Killer Kush in the next post.

The Big Nugs fv have been a very successful grow this year. These are in 7 gallon smart pots with the bottom cut out so the roots can spread out into the shallow bed they are in. I basically just put straight cow manure in the pots but I think I did mix a bit of peat moss in also. Almost no yellowing leaves right up to harvest. Buds are loaded with crystals and quite dense *7 out of 10*. Very fruity grape smell that wafts through my house every night. These plants could have been harvested in mid September but thankfully the weather here in BC has been wonderful for growing. I could let these go another week but there's rain (damp weather) and cool temps in the forecast for next week so these will be coming down in the next few days. I left these uncovered for the entire summer and threw the make-shift plastic awning over them a couple weeks ago when a 4 day stretch of rainshowers hit us. Very happy with this strain but will leave my final judgement for after I've dried/cured it. Here's a few pics...

The Killer Kush 'fast version' is a cross between an indica dominant auto and OG Kush. Not sure if pics do any of these buds justice but the Killer Kush is very frosty. The buds are very dense *8.5-9 out of 10*. Typically heavy citrus/fuel smell. Most colas are 12-16" long or so. Pretty heavy yielder. These two plants are in a 5'x15' raised bed, lots of manure but a much more diverse soil compared to the Big Nugs. These plants are a week or two behind the Big Nugs although the window to harvest has opened. I will likely wait another week for them, or until the rain gets here next week.

So, I will definitely be growing fast versions every year. Being able to harvest in September is a huge bonus. All these plants were germinated from seed on 4/20 of this year and transplanted outside in early to mid May. I've grown many different (non) fast version plants and never have I had any ready to harvest as early as these fast versions. It might only knock a week or two off the harvest date but sometimes that's the difference between a perfect harvest and losing half your plants to mold. Seeds are from GTA seedbank in Toronto.

I live in Southern Ontario and I plan on trying a bunch of new genetics and testing them indoors and outdoors.

I love growing outdoor as I have been doing it since the 80s

I am going to start a blog about which strains suit Southern Ontario the best outdoor wise with info on temperature, humidity, bugs, finishing time and overall if that strain is a good idea to grow in my area. I think it will be helpful.

Early flowering traits can often be oheno specific more so than strain specific from what Ive seen and experienced
So far of the 12 or so 'fast version' plants I've grown, all of them flowered early and equally on time. I'm sure one day I'll run into one that doesn't carry the quick flowering genetics but so far it's been very consistent. I think it's also very important for Canadian growers to choose a strain that's known to be mold resistant and one that still thrives in colder weather.

Ya sorry I wasnt specific enough. My post was in reference to ‘standard regular seeds’.

I would hope all phenos of an ‘early’ strain would finish early

Curious to know what has worked for you in the past? Getting to mid-October seems to be a challenge in S.Ontario... bugs, cold, wet, mold.

I'd follow your blog! I have Orange Cookies finishing week 8 of flower right now with some large buds. Not a lot of drying going on now, so might need to harvest a week earlier than I wanted.

Cheers!

I’ll bud in and share my experience this season Purple Punch from Barney’s Farm, Glueberry OG from Dutch Passion and LA Ultra from Resin Seeds Co were all mold resistant strains true to their descriptions. Very pleasantly surprised. Considering I have done a 4 stage harvest over a month. With the plants having open wounds all over and cold rainy weather we’ve had late September and early October.

I've been working a Honduran line for a few years and finally got what I was looking for. It's a heavy yielding mold resistant strain that grows in spears. I reversed the candidates from last year and now I have female S1 & F1 seeds. I harvested the clones 3rd-4th week of September and are they every heavy! I'm half finished the seed harvest and it's already my biggest haul yet.

The momma and her sisters were used to give me 200 clones. They were raped for clones over and over until July 1st. They looked pretty sorry and abused with barely any leaves by the time I was done with them. I was going to put them in the compost pile, but decided to stick them in my garden instead. Damn if they weren't my best plants this year.

August 1st and well into the stretch. Final stretch is 150-200% !

1lb of S1 seeds.
Half will be packaged, and the rest are headed for long term storage in the blast freezer (-40c) along with the F1 regulars and pollen.

If you start that blog make sure to put up a link, I'm in Southern Ontario as well, and I've had a few mishaps with plants not finishing in time.
The best two strains I've grown here were Pineapple Express #2, and Blue Cheese. Both were done by the end of September, no mold. The PE had a touch of PM, but Green Cure took care of that. The BC had a bit of a scale infestation, but garlic chili spray wiped them out.

Have tried Carnage and it finished in September south of London, ON. One had pink pistils, another smelled like coffee. Great up high. Also tried Mediplant that finished mid/late October. Very unique smell. Great meds. Tested at 22% THC w/1% CBG. Too was eyeing ultimate hash plant and Turkish Delight instead of Turkish Cookies. How was Oh Zone - finish time and affect?
