I was thinking of starting some hempy buckets. Could a person use crushed rock in the first 2-3 inches on the bottom then a coco / perlite mix to fill the rest?

you could use the crushed rocks but I wouldn't....better off just using perlite, or mix 25% vermiculite with the perlite.

I would recommend that you go with the perlite/vermiculite for your first hempy grow, as coco is a bit tricky.

As a grower who learned from the original Dahli Hempy, I can tell you that crushed rock will displace the water in the rez where you really need it. Even hydroton takes up a lot of space in the rez forcing more frequent watering. I've played with every medium there is, even polyurethane couch foam. The combination I found for the largest yield and convenience is plain Canna coco up top (no perlite) and Grodan mini-cubes (rockwool) in the bottom. The coco holds the air roots with a perfect water/oxygen ratio and the rockwool mini-cubes in the rez hold a lot of water for the water roots. With a hole 2" from the bottom of a 2 gal bucket and rockwool in the rez you will get an even gallon for feeds with just enough overflow to keep the rez fresh and free of salts. 1 gal feeds are really convenient to measure and mix based on most nute bottles. For a 3.5 gal bucket you will need 1.5 gal's. For those questioning the use of coco in a hempy setup, it holds moisture longer than perlite in the top of the bucket allowing longer times between watering's. You won't have to water daily for roots to hit the rez . The original Dahly Hempy started with all perlite buckets but as time progressed he found plain coco worked better for yields.

Oh I forgot to mention, if you are new to coco in hempy's don't fall for the cheap bricks or mixes that require you to clean/rinse and buffer or pre-charge with nutes. There are quality coco's ready to go right out of the bag that are cleaned and buffered already. Cana being the Cadillac of brands IMO. Also a nutrient regimen that is designed for coco will help compensate for coco's ability to rob Cal/Mag. Have no fear....its a great medium in a hempy and your yields vs work input will have you hooked.

Created by a Hempy grower (me :) ) to assist with a "new", more manageable user friendly system that provides the ease of full automation.

Rockwool...hmm you got the gears turning sounds like a variation of that couch cusion stuff they use in the Netherlands (forget the name)

I've grown in hempies for years always using canna coco pro plus which is sterilised/cleaned, i always use coco with clay pebbles in the bottom til just past the drainage hole, The reason i use coco is 1. i know exactly what feed the plant is getting and 2. no flies ever which most get when using soil.
i never use a perlite vermiculite mix, however i did to when i first started with hempies but sussed it was a waste of money, also i have never ever added cal mag and never suffered any deficiencies not using it. nutes used either vitalink coco or canna coco, that's it.

So its a hempy dwc system, tried it already, far too many variables to go wrong, pump failing lines clogging, annoying noise of pumps/s unlike standard hempy, water, leave it, water, harvest, jobs a good un.
