You'll need at least 500 watts of good diodes. Unless you DIY the fixture, using a Chinese QB clone is about the only thing that'll fit your budget.

I could recommend lights all day, but ultimately the decision will be up to you. If it were me, I would ditch the HPS altogether if heat is this much of an issue and go all LED.

You must use 42.3w Sq/Ft of the very best LED Diodes to equal a 1000w HID.

Gavita 1700e 645w is a direct replacement for a 1000w Hortilux HPS in a 4 x 4 area. No way around it, though it blows the budget out of the water.

Best budget LED are HLG, and will still be more than a $500 budget. They use Samsung/Osram Diodes. Dont use any other Diode if you want as good as results as HID. But you must use 42.3w Sq/ft regardless. 1000w HID/Hortilux is 1600umol, and 62.5w Sq/Ft.

Gavita 1700e is 645w, and 1700umol

Gonna take about $800usd-$1000usd for the HLG.

Nope, no need for it because we have such a large area, are in a basemaent, which is very cool, and really good ventilation. We also use a Dual Ended 1150w Gavita. We use all 3. 1000w Hortilux HPS

In many cases though you would need to cool them. I think it Takes about 8000btu to cool each 1000w Hortilux

Unfortunately, there's not much for under $500 that will hold up to a 1000w.
Are air cooled hoods not an option for the heat?
I run 2.6kW hps in my 4x8 and just hit the 1 gram per watt mark after only 10 months of growing.
Couldn't pay me to move to LED.
Couldn't pay me to move to HPS lol! I started out at more than 1g/w, not gonna go backwards lol. To each their own, as long as you get fat sticky flowers that smell and taste good who cares right?
