Washing the soil CAUSES the plant to eat the nutrients in the leaves. Note that I'm not yelling when I say "CAUSES" because I'm not being mean. I'm highlighting the relationship that soil has to the flowers eating the nutrients in the leaves.
The plant stored them because they were in excess. It could be that they were needed but got locked out due to improper ratios. Does that make sense to you or are you offended again?
