First I want to say mahalo. For you nice words and post. And i always think it a great idea to keep track of progress from little babies and on.Just finished my cup of coffee and had to jump in on this. Few things:
1 - really nice grow and set up Kona!
2 - I'm 39 and a half so I'm a little young for the old timers "rks" so prevalent in the 80's time to witness the "real rks" so I can't really comment and am starting to lean towards what RBJesusFreak said that it might just be an oldtimers hazey recollection phenomenon.
3 - I live in the country and drive by dead skunks all the time, so I'm really familiar with the real smell. In my opinion, skunks on the side of road only emit a "skunk" spray smell, unless the car didn't hit the scent gland where the "skunk" smell is. If the car misses the gland, the smell will be a common decomposing animal smell once decomposition sets in (depending on the weather).
Number 3 is why I am leaning towards what RBJF said. If not, oldtimers at @jimihendrix1 , please chime in on what is the difference between a "skunk spray" smell and what you consider rks smell.
I think the skunk spray smell is truly what everyone is after.
That being said, I'm on the hunt too and would love to find a skunk line or pheno to grow. I posted in another thread about searching for rks, but I'm running the following strains looking for it:
- Blue Orca x rks (swami)
- Stonemason (nature farm)
- DLA5 (bodhi)
I'm still in veg on all these and try to give a stem rub as much as possible and always jot down the smells I find if they're strong and I identify them. Funny enough, so far the strain I'm getting the most skunk spray smell from is Bodhi's '89 Northern Lights Noof cut x BCSC NL5 f2's I made a few years ago. One of the females (#5) I seeded had a skunk smell to her. One of her offspring I'm growing now, #18 now has a really strong skunk spray smell on the stem rub. Way more of a skunk smell than what I have recorded on the others mentioned above.
I'm guessing the smells will change during flower, but I thought I'd mention it.
BOHxrks is also giving a little skunk smell on a couple plants so far, but not as strong/pungent as the NL. Stonemason hasn't shown any skunk like smells yet that I've noticed but a more subdued sweet like smell. DLA5, a few have a really unique dead animal smell to them. Like a decomposing animal/beef jerky like smell but it's more acrid and nasty/funky smelling.
So I am about 10 years older than you, so im somewhere in the middle. I didn't start smoking herb till the mid 80's.
The skunk that i am referring to, was more like the skunk that wasn't freshly run over, to where the spray smell is overpowering! It was more of a skunk that was a few miles away. That has that real sharp pungent! Not like ammonia like the spray. I don't like that smell!!
I was considering those Swami RKS crosses, but decided against it after running the Blue Orca Haze and the Hawaiian Cherry Bomb. I realized he was breeding for more crystal content, yield, and stone. But wasn't really focused on smell, flavor, or complexity of the high.
So I don't buy his gear anymore. Although I keep an update on his new gear, just in case I see something really cool.
But on a side note, the skunk I smoked, was referred to as skunk#1. Not roadkill.
And one of its traits that no one has come across, the main one to me, was the insane flavor!!! None of these new versions carries that stay in your mouth skunk lingering flavor!! Yes it was super strong and the high made you laugh your ass off and have the Chinese Red eye syndrome, but that flavor, and it could get you in trouble, even like a half hour after smoking a joint! Because you still smelled it on your breath.
I don't find much, if any, with that much flavor. And it a challenge today to find that really sticky green that gives you red eyes.
