First time DWC and plants showing deficiencies

Got these in 5 gal buckets with airstone directly under the pots, they just now starting to put roots into the water and now I have magnesium defiencies showing up.
Under LED, temps 71 degrees slightly more during the day but only goes to 73.
Water rez is a mix of Cal mag and general hydroponics 3 part solution .

15 ml of Cal mag brings up 39 ppm well water to 210 ppm in 5 gal of water. The rest is equal amounts of 3 part of of the general hydroponics ferts of micro, bloom and veg. Total ppm is 310-317 depending on which bucket. All are showing defiencies. Also showing lack of nitrogen to my eye if I was growing in soil. Light colored leaves of new growth but could be nute lockout??

Yes I know it's a Calcium or magnesium def, should I bump it up an additional 100 ppm with Cal mag? Or should I use Epsom salt? I would think 200 ppm of Cal mag as a base would of been enough calmag. Maybe I should run just 300 ppm of calmag and that's it until they get bigger?

But ph and ec is the very first place to start.

OK. Cool.
Ppms sounds about right.
If you're using calmag, cut it out for now. If you use RO add only 25-50ppm calmag for a plant that size. Use your base nutrient, and do a reservoir change. This time just over ph6. See if it improves.

If it improves -

Still change your reservoir fresh, at 5.8. But let it drift above ph6 before you top off.

If you haven't seen improvement by tomorrow. Post back here.

The only thing that I think it could be is the pH rising on me. When I get back to my room later on I'm gonna have to test the pH once again.
The roots are just now starting to touch the water.

I started most of the seeds in grodan rockwool cubes with one exception.. had one plant in a foam cup with soil. Believe it or not but the soil plant is 3x bigger now in the dwc bucket it come up a couple days later than the rockwool seeds did. I just placed it the pebbles just like the rockwool cubes. I wasn't sure it would work but just to try it. Liked the results .

Yeah it makes sense for it to be ph, to me as well.

As long as its a drip fed, rdwc. The roots sitting in air, shouldn't be the problem.

Ok thanks I'll do that and see if it belps. I've learned that soil is much more forgiving than hydro, if their is a problem it shows up quickly and you better be on top of it

Yep. You have no time at all, to act. Dwc is one of the fastest as well. Next to aeroponics.
Pure hydro is a good challenge


If you ever feel like a change. Try coir imo. I love the stuff. It's a fantastic hybrid between the two as well.

Went to the grow and checked the pH and it had tested 6.94. I already had some pH up and down but no directions on package or bottles. Never used it before as I always grew in soil and just used lime. Had no signal so had to drive where I had signal, went to general hydroponics site and directions said 1 ml per gal. So I added 1 ml per gal of pH down and tested the water and it was down to just above 3. So I had to add 7 ml of pH up to bring it up to 5.7.
I think it will rise some more

This is a lesson learned on not to trust general hydroponics website on their directions. But hopefully this solves the issue.

Started getting good new growth with no spots. Checked on the grow tonight and the PH was back up to around 7 again. So I then added some PH down which took around 2.5 ml per 5 gal to lower it back to 5.8 ish. What is causing everyone of my 5 gal buckets to keep rising in pH? Is this normal where I have to add pH down every 2 days?
Also I noticed I had a bunch of brown roots in one of the buckets with several fresh white ones. Will pH cause this? Remember I added per GH equirements and the pH fell to 3.0 before I added pH up. Would that of killed off the roots? Room temp climbed to 77 today with the outside temp being 15 degrees above normal of course. Need to buy another air conditioner.

Firstly. It's great it's better. Good news.

Secondly. It's your calmag. You may as well be using really hard water. It's the same thing

Isn't your water 25 - 50ppm out the tap anyway???

I'm pretty sure there's a lot of calcium in your well. It's buffering your water.

Just like lime in a garden.
