I have been wanting to start a bin for quite awhile and just haven't for one reason or another...but this year I am planning on changing that...I would like to build a fairly large ..if needed..bin...I'm just wondering if anyone has built theres and wished they had done something differently...not only that but all the low down on the world lol... best place to order them...what I should use..how to keep up with them in the winter..just anything that will help... things

uncle jims is a good worm source
keep the bedding moist, but not so moist that you have run off
feed them every time you see they are done with a meal
be sure to give them rock dust/sand/oyster shells so they have grit for their gizzard
mine are always inside, so no winter advice to be had from me (but i know they don't like harsh winter)
i wish i made 5 bins instead of starting with 1 lol.

I was wondering if having a few smaller bins compared to a larger one would be better..I think it would in my case..I can take them in during the winter that way..and would ground egg shells make OK girt..

yeah small bins are fine. mine are only like 15 gal totes or something. ground egg shells are decent grit

Gasses are an issue, I never put a lid on them even with holes in them, worms always try and make a break for it if there is a gas buildup in the bins

get a bbq thermometer to seed how hot your mix is, hell get 2 so you can stick the nonfood area and also the food area

Not addressed to me, but yes, greensand works well in this case along with being added to mixes.

Thanks wet...so I have another q...would it be a good idea to have multiple bins and feed each bin separately..I might keep one I feed everything to if this is a good idea...meaning feed certain items to get the desired nutes in the castings..

I love my worm bin. I've only had it 3 months but I find it's a great way to get rid of my Cannabis leaves and stalks.
I think surface area is more important than how deep your bin is.
My worms are currently using a rubbermaid 18 gal bin.
I would do it differently if I had more room. I would like to try the 50 gal Roughneck Jumbo and do the harvest one side at a time method. I just don't have the room.

I'm going to split my bin into 3 of those 27 Gal solid bins (ones with Yellow lids / or Blue lids at CT ) I will be able to stack them on my shelf. I think they are the best value for surface area.

How much space do you have for worms bins?
How much worm food can your household produce or have access to?
Can you do any wood working?
