Making the transition to full organics ans i have a tonne of old promix left and it would sace me a lot of $ if i couls use it in my beds. Do i need to flush it out before i mix ny organic amendments? Do i need to re add any liming agent? Thanks guys.

i'd flush it out good, then mix it in my beds with a good dose of lime. i'd try to let it sit for a month or so before i planted anything in it, just to let it digest a little.
i haven't done this, but i don't see a problem with it. now that i've said that, lets have 100 people that do see problems come and tell us both what they are

Peat is pretty acidic, which may be an issue in an outside bed. thats why i suggested giving it some time to absorb a little fresh lime.
i'd try mixing it into a good size sample of the soil, waiting a day or two, then checking the ph of both the soil and the run off. if it doesn't seem high, go for it.

Skip it all and grow hydro! :) Is there any possibility of a good flush and mix with new a little bit of new media? Just my thought it may not be a good idea, but it sounds good in theory....

if you're looking to mix in amendments and compost, you have to let it sit for at least 3 weeks. flush medium heavily before hand with pH'ed water so it will get salts into solution and rinse them away (6-6.5 ph). Then you'll want to let it drain well. then you can forth and mix in your amendments and compost.

organic gardening indoors takes patience and planning my friend.

edit: wait when you say "old promix" do you mean already used, or stuff unused still in the bag??? big difference....

Ive had a successful run but trying to emulate it with some old promix to make more beds. So its settled; ill flush medium mix amendments and grow some more dank meds organic style.

if its used promix and you were feeding it from bottles, i'd flush it. if it's unused promix, i would not flush and just go ahead and mix in the amendments after pre-moistening the medium. Also don't forget, you'll need to add drainage material to the promix. it will definitely not have enough by the time you add your compost.

Let er rip!

A bit of lime for pH (important), a bit of gypsum IF you have it.

The gypsum will help strip the salts from the mix, but they leach out pretty quick on their own from my experience. I had a boatload of soil like that when I transitioned to organics and had zero problems with any Jack's classic residue in the old mix, even without the added gypsum.

It just got better with each succesive grow as slow release stuff became available with time.

But, do lime it and bumping the aeration % up is always a good move.

Stellar reply as ALWAYS. Thanks wetdog, im going to use OSF because i have it on hand... what do you think per cu ft? Note that i habe crab shell meal in my amendment mix as well.

OSF is fine. 1cup/cf is pretty standard for unlimed mixes. If it's a reamend this gets adjusted accordingly if it was limed before.

Not quite flushing, but a few heavy waterings took care of it for me. Regular waterings wash it out, that's why you need to use it so often.

Crab shell is a good addition for the long term, the CaCO3 in the shells is pretty slow to release. Good stuff, but not a substitute for lime or OSF.

What about for the old promix only used for 1 run with salts? How would you re amend that with OSF? 1/4 cup?
