Yea lots has changed since the water furnace days. And I feel you on the thermostats most normal ones will talk to most geo/ heatpump setups anymore. You may want to revisit them now. The technology has come a long way. What’s given it a bad name is like you said above shitty, no knowledge installers that had no business putting them in. Sadly a lot of have companies are out there that will still install a system and unfortunately won’t get their installers trained on the units they sell and that goes for most things anymore. Companies want to sell you all sorts of stuff but lack the knowledge of the stuff they’re actually selling/ installing. Even ducting, there’s a lot of ppl out there that can’t design duct work properly resulting in one disappointing setup.
