I care about my right to self determine and equal rights, which, if you were a reasoning person would logically mean, if I consider that I have a right to self determine, all other people must have that right to.

What civil rights did was attempt to fix a problem. It failed.
It was certainly wrong for government to forcibly prevent people of any race who wished to associate from doing so.
The reason it was wrong was because it removed self determination of individual people, regardless of race.
When government flipped and insisted that people under some circumstances MUST associate, it was wrong, again, because it forcibly removed self determination of individual people.
