Does the future of humanity actually matter to you?

Would it matter to you if humanity went extinct after you died? Would it make any difference to you now if humanity expanded to inhabit every corner of the universe? Of course you'd never know anyway, right? So what difference does it actually make?

Why should I or anyone care about climate change? The actual effects that will take place down the line decades from now won't really affect any of us living now beyond what we likely won't be able to mitigate ourselves, so should I really care? Why?

Why should we give a fuck? Why don't we all just live for ourselves, now?

Sure, you address some good points, why the fuck should we care? It';s not our problem, let them solve it in a few hundred years. Can't really argue with that.

In all honesty I think that people who have that kind of opinion are narrow minded and ignorant, no matter their job or social status.

The world is already a shitty place to live in, that kind of a mindset could be adopted in a utopia, something that in this day and age will never be achieved.

We should all strive to make the world a better place. Not that it'll matter for US, but it will matter. I think it's a mindset of empathetic and intelligent people, the kind that actually sit down for a second and ask themselves: "hold up, what will happen if I do this...

I personally don't care about what happens to the world, during my life and after. Future humans will adapt to what ever environment we create for them, they will have the same issues that we have, and find happiness smoking some mutant strain.

Breathe in with love.... and out with parasitic tendencies.

If I live life just for myself, it gets shallow, vapid and boring very quickly. Doing something for others is much more satisfying.

The work I do is meant to help feed people from this era onward, wherever we may go, whatever the environment may be.

That's seeding the future, and that's what motivates me.

But isn't that still living for yourself? You venture into these things to help others because it gives you personal satisfaction, so are you really doing it for others or are you doing it for yourself?

Regardless, I don't think it matters if the end goals are still the same and the incentive to help people because they will appreciate it is much better than the incentive to help people just to turn a profit, so I salute you!

Helping others can be profitable AND personally rewarding, there's no rule saying those two must be mutually exclusive. Tends to help with the bills, too.

Yes I'm doing it for myself. I'm doing it to make me feel better about the quality of life I was given by all those faceless forebears, everyone who came before me and worked to make the world a better place.

Today is a spark in the vastness of eternity. Doing good for those who come after me is a way to leave my mark for a longer time than just a day, a week- or a lifetime.

Call it hubris to immortality if you want. I won't get to the future, but something I did could.

That's because you find meaning in that... maybe you're right, living for me is shallow, heck, lets say selfish... guess what, I am the center of the universe according to me... and, if I'm doing stuff to make me feel like accomplished, or some sense of self worth, isn't that selfish too? and weird? because, you know, self worth comes from within.

Also, if you didn't think humanity was worthwhile, or that we weren't going anywhere as a species... limited future, supernova, self destruction, whatever... then wouldn't trying to do something for them be futile and nihilistic?
