Salon talks to filmmaker Jen Senko about her new documentary on radical right-wing media's terrifying effect

Filmmaker Jen Senko noticed a disturbing phenomenon. Her father, Frank, was a goofy, fun, non-political dad who treated people with respect when she was a child. However, when she was older, she noticed her father would rant about “Feminazis,” listen to Rush Limbaugh and watch Fox News. He became the family pest, forcing one-sided discussions of conservative politics and becoming enraged and unreachable after watching Fox News.

Senko investigates the reasons for this transformation in her stirring new documentary, “The Brainwashing of My Dad.” She interviews activist Noam Chomsky, author David Brock, who penned the article “Confessions of a Right-Wing Hit Man,” and Salon’s own Matthew Saccaro (“I Was a Teenage Fox News Robot”), among others to emphasize the invasiveness of Fox News. She even includes Skype interviews with ordinary people whose Fox News-loving family members shut them out of their lives.

Hence the reason why FOX NEWS is #1 cable show. Old white bigots sit in front of their TV's and believe all the garbage that they put out. It also baffles me how they vote against their best interest, I know white folks here where I live (Poconos) who are poor and eligible for Obamacare but won't get it because they hate Obama. Go figure.

I'm not prepared to blame it all on Fox News but I could have written an identical piece about my own dad. It's sad because he's taken himself so far down the rabbit hole that he has alienated everyone in the family, particularly my sister and I. It's not that I have an issue with his difference of opinion, simply the fact that we hear from him maybe twice a year if we're lucky, and it is an absolute guarantee that within 60 seconds, before he asks about how my niece is or my girlfriend or my job or anything else, he's going to bring up some sort of political issue and make a comment about how the liberals are ruining things. He visited my sister a few months ago and before he had made it through the door, sat down his bags, or even said hello to his granddaughter he went off on a political tangent and ranted for 5 minutes about something totally unrelated to his visit with us.

He's legitimately too far gone to be helped now so on that twice-a-year occasion when I get a call if I'm lucky, but usually just a text, I just ignore it now. What he fails to realize is that it has nothing to do with his politics and everything to do with his vitriol and lack of concern for how it affects his relationship with his family.

I actually used to enjoy debating politics with him 10 years ago, when I was filled with a little more piss and vinegar and he was a little more lucid and reasonable about it. It's like watching somebody slip into media-induced Alzheimers and it fucking sucks.

Those are the classic symptoms my friend. If you're not prepared to blame it all on Faux, I'm sure that the drug addicted limbaugh will be more than willing to share some of the blame.

A close second:
The only reason they would have ran that crawler or whatever is becuase that's what was being said at the location being filmed.

That would be a quote from the crowd or someone in it. It's not like they make it up.

I hear a lot of bashing of fox news and see very little actual evidence of them actually just making shit up.

Unfortunately this is my dad too. He is pulling my mom down w him. Im not super liberal. But because I don't agree w his perspective100% I am labeled that way. Sad really when dementia is led by the media. Pretty much all media sucks though. Always focus on the shit that matters the least.

I don't watch TV or the news etc.. I read it online if I want.to know. Maybe I'm having an equally inverse reaction to my dads craptastic behavior. Lol

I honestly don't know where terrorist fist jab came from. It looks crazy in just a screen shot. But I'm willing to bet if you watched it live and paid attention you'd know what it meant. And I doubt they're saying it was the Obama's jabbing fists like terrorists.

Of course that's what's implied by the screen shot.. and that's why I've always said the fox news detractors are more dishonest than fox news.

Look, it's an information war, and objectivity isn't the goal it's scoring points. It's easy to take a screen of something, remove any and all context and have something that looks fishy.

Just like how you can pause live TV of a hot chick doing something and in the middle of her sentence she looks all crazy. Looks perfectly normal while you watch it. But frozen in time looks crazy as hell.

Just know, that to anyone who cares about reality the fox news team has a biased slant but is otherwise fair. While you and your side are perfectly willing to lie to make fox news look bad. Which is more dishonest?

it isn't liberals making it up she really did ask if its a "terrorist fist jab"

it's akin to asking if its a secret"paedophiles greeting"
"satanic symbols"
it doesn't matter what was said afterwards the implications are still there from question
