I'm going to build a Cabin

Or try anyway.

I have a field, or what use to be one 30 years ago, in my back 40. Over the years of not having cattle this pasture has become too over grown with tamarack so I'm clearing it this spring.

I spent a couple hours out there today before the rain moved in. There's a lot of trees I'll have to cut and there should be more than enough for a small cabin.

Not sure of the size yet as I'm going to clear and stack the logs before I start building, I'll get a better idea of what I have to work with then.

This is the style cabin I would like to build.

I picked a spot I think would be good.

Some that I cut, got over 30 big ones down already.

I'd go bigger on the foundation unless it's a shooting shack/ bunk house

You're living the Murican dream bro! Bust it out with a cellar and a wood stove on the main deck. Kinda like that old timey western shit! No seriously man that's a freeking awesome idea. Followed.

I'm fixing to build an 8x8 on poles in the air. Something small and built like that small one. Tin roof. I will hunt out of it.
I was thinking about that since I have a good size pile of telephone poles but I'm way to afraid of heights to do that to myself. I was trying to think for the longest time how I could build it then get it up in the air but that seems like too much work, I'm on a time frame being so far north. Might have only a few good months to work.

Sweet! Are you using the native wood? I don't know anything about tamarack, is it useable wood?
Tamarack is one of the only pines to lose its needles during the winter, makes them easy to tell apart and not as much sap I have to deal with. Because it grow seasonally it's a littler stronger than other pine, it's used for fence posts a lot because of it's rot resistance. I cleared some trees a few years ago and the fence is holding strong.

if I can help in any way bro....
Appreciate it!

I'm not scared of heights. I was a painter in the air force. The tail on a e-8c or kc-135 is pretty high up. I worked construction for a while.

I use a portable climbing stand to hunt with. It gets kind of spooky 30 foot in the air with your tree rocking in the wind. There has been a lot of people hurt from falling out of them.

Some friends and I walked a railroad bridge that was a couple hundred feet up. We had to climb off the tracks and sit under them because a train came through. The section in the air was long. It was stupid but a good laugh now.
