'Defensive'- let us ask Ukrainians about Russian defensiveness.
No you have not one idea what it was all about
When the Ukrainian president was replaced by a US-selected administration, in an entirely unconstitutional takeover, politicians such as William Hague brazenly misled parliament about the legality of what had taken place: the imposition of a pro-western government on Russia's most neuralgic and politically divided neighbour.

Putin bit back, taking a leaf out of the US street-protest playbook – even though, as in Kiev, the protests that spread from Crimea to eastern Ukraine evidently have mass support. But what had been a glorious cry for freedom in Kiev became infiltration and insatiable aggression in Sevastopol and Luhansk.

After Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to join Russia, the bulk of the western media abandoned any hint of even-handed coverage. So Putin is now routinely compared to Hitler, while the role of the fascistic right on the streets and in the new Ukrainian regime has been airbrushed out of most reporting as Putinist propaganda.

So you don't hear much about the Ukrainian government's veneration of wartime Nazi collaborators and pogromists, or the arson attacks on the homes and offices of elected communist leaders, or the integration of the extreme Right Sector into the national guard, while the anti-semitism and white supremacism of the government's ultra-nationalists is assiduously played down, and false identifications of Russian special forces are relayed as fact.

The reality is that, after two decades of eastward Nato expansion, this crisis was triggered by the west's attempt to pull Ukraine decisively into its orbit and defence structure, via an explicitly anti-Moscow EU association agreement. Its rejection led to the Maidan protests and the installation of an anti-Russian administration – rejected by half the country – that went on to sign the EU and International Monetary Fund agreements regardless.

No Russian government could have acquiesced in such a threat from territory that was at the heart of both Russia and the Soviet Union. Putin's absorption of Crimea and support for the rebellion in eastern Ukraine is clearly defensive, and the red line now drawn: the east of Ukraine, at least, is not going to be swallowed up by Nato or the EU.

You're long winded, to the point where I'm guessing many of these posts are prewritten.

@2ANONYMOUS What...? What are you talking about? Russia's economy isn't hurting? The US didn't hurt the USSR's economy? Were you born 1995-1998? Honest question, because we ran the USSR to the brink of economic collapse because they sunk all their money into a military that was horrendous. We also out paced them technologically so every time they'd come out with something to counter our latest system, we'd already have the next system coming out. The only time the USSR had the up on us was the space race, and then we once again outpaced them. This is common knowledge, it's not an opinion, it's a well known fact. To say otherwise is to ignore history. In 1985 the USSR's economy was stagnant, and it's foreign currency earnings plummeted.

Moreover Russia's military has huge, huge, huge problems in it. Soldiers raping each other, soldiers murdering each other, gambling, huge drug and alcohol problems, morale has always been an issue, corruption at every level, soldiers committing crimes, desertion.

On the subject of China dumping US currency,it is because their own economy took a hit so they're dumping the currency on the market to earn money. The value of their currency was actually in decline, so they needed money. China is non issue when it comes to currency manipulation, as the largest manipulator of currency is the European Central Bank and the Central Bank of Japan. Really, just read the news and don't jump to conclusions.

On the subject of Coalition airstrikes in Syria, they just did one 9 hours ago - look it up. We also did one on Nov 28th, http://sana.sy/en/?p=62788.

Russian intervention in Syria was not to wipe out Daesh, it was because Assad was losing. It was a last ditch effort to keep the Assad regime propped up, but now it's at a stand still. The CIA's TOW missile program has been responsible for knocking out ~65 tanks and APCs, and 1 Russian helicopter during the 2015 Northwestern Syria offensive. In total the SAA has lost ~350 APCs, and their tank force has been decimated.

Assad is included in the new objective for peace in Syria, you can thank Putin for that. He prevented a US led T-Hawk strike at both sides when the Chem. Weps. came out, and now he`s preventing a US led coup.

That base is now re-opened. watching the movements of the 5th and 6th fleets.
Well looks like Russia is throwing out the 32 billion dollar debt that Cuba defaulted ???? not sure if its re opened but hey its 135 miles off USA soil... you America shouldn't scream to bad considering they think its ok to put bases that close to Russian soil ??? but theoretically speaking here ??? out of the 2 countries who has been the most aggressive in the last 10 years lol
seriously

Which is why we should let Iran take over the fields in NE Iraq near Mosul.
It might sound like a solution in the short term, but could come back to bite the ass long term. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to have Iran that close to Syria. I dont trust Iran at all. Not even a little bit. I'm not saying we should stop it from happening, but that scenario could turn out to be a recipe for disaster.

The Americans fresh from their military defeat in Iraq and in Afghanistan are looking for new places to use their massive war machine, along with selling its merchandise. It's well known that the US creates situations that then boosts its arms industries to supplying 40% of all weapons sold worldwide each year.

What better place to display all your technology and weapons of destruction then in the "theatre of war".

Only recently the US convinced the Saudis that Iran was a big threat to them in the region that ended up with a USD 60 B order of -: 84 F15 jet fighters, 70 F15 upgrades, 190 helicopters and an array of weapons. So, it's very easy to see that fear gets results especially when you are the person behind it!

Double standards are not a new thing for the Americans, because they have been playing this game for a very long time. Who gave the Soviets the details of how to build a nuclear bomb? The recent terrorists attacks on Iranian scientists who were working on the nuclear program in Iran, has not received any condemnations from the country that's obsessed with terrorism. The assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, took place on January 19, 2010, in a Dubai hotel room and involved 26 Mossad suspects. Yet again not a word from the US and illustrates that "turning the other cheek" is a frequent occurrence when it suits.

Why now is Iran getting the full US treatment on the pretext of it being a danger to world peace, if it has the ability to build a nuclear bomb when other countries more unstable, already have these weapons in place? It's because the American influence is now diminishing (especially in other Arab countries whose despot rulers where supported by them), and along with a bankrupt economy new tactics must be found to bolster their military industry and try to re-establish themselves as world leaders in everything. Also, being seen as the good guys! but to the opposite now

If you read most articles or listen to what the majority of Arabs /Muslins are saying about who is responsible for de-stabilising the Middle East (with the exception of Saudi Arabia), it's the Palestinian problem and the Americans' support of Israel in all of this that's the root cause.

Israel has not confirmed that it has nuclear weapons and officially maintains that it will not be the first country to introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East. Yet the existence of Israeli nuclear weapons is a "public secret" by now due to the declassification of large numbers of formerly highly classified US government documents, which show that the United States by 1975 was convinced that Israel had nuclear weapons. Today, Israel is the world's sixth most powerful nuclear state, with a stockpile of more than 100 nuclear weapons and with the components and ability to build atomic, neutron and hydrogen bombs. France contributed a lot in this.

In April 2009, reports surfaced that North Korea has become a "fully fledged nuclear power", an opinion shared by IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei. On May 25, 2009, North Korea conducted another nuclear test, which is believed to have been the cause of a magnitude 4.7 seismic event. Although there is no official information about the test's location, it is believed that it happened in the north-eastern region near Kilju, the site of North Korea's first nuclear test.

Both India and Pakistan built nuclear weapons in 1998.

During the cold war both the Soviets and Americans had thousands of nuclear weapons but that fact stopped any being used, and as we can see it's still working with other countries today.

The prospective of a conflict with Iran would be like Armageddon and must never happen. With the IMF now predicting oil prices could raise between 20%-30% if there was a conflict, this might be the only thing that will focus the minds of the antagonists!

Ira is gonna be the only State with more power than they know what to do with. If there`s gonna be a new leadership for Syria, they can play off it. Especially if Syria get`s to expand to the edges of those fields. (Mosul) There`s nothing much South of that and Iran don`t want it.

That shit`s not Iraq`s anymore, Iraq bailed on their counter attacks and abandoned hardware. It`s been lost to battle for what ?, Two years ??
